You said Qarir forces were withdrawn, which means no Rhunic soldiers. You were surrounded, and the attackers were unseen and in hiding. A patrol isn't much help when thy don't see the attackers until the attack, and the attackers overwhelm them. And who said it was easy? Many Naturalists died
