Representative democracies tend to outlast direct democracies because they allow other parties and views to be represented instead of just the one what wins the most overall votes, which could be dangerous as evidenced by failed experiments with democracy in Africa and Latin America. In the US, basically the house, senate, districts, parties and electoral college are all designed to allow for a broader representation of all peoples and parties in the US.
Also, one of the reasons whomever wins the popular vote in a majority of states wins is to limit the power of the federal government and give more power to the states and also level the field somewhat for smaller states vs larger ones, that is how the Union works, each state sends its representatives and votes, the election is actually a series of smaller elections for each state.

I'm not even talking about the popular vote. I'm just telling you that Trump barely won most counties, and didn't get any landslides. (In any of the counties) Meanwhile, Hillary destroyed you in a few. The map that I linked tells the fill truth, yours does not.
