They may have left Scandinavia or Greenland in 999. I forget which Leif Ericsson comes from. Vinland was the name yes.

St. Augustine. 1500s. Columbus only went to islands near South America, and while Jamestown was the first English colony in North America, St. Augustine at Florida was the European colony in North America

Erik the Red first discovered Vinland, but Leif settled it briefly
I believe if the Vikings were able to map out the coast and we have archaeological evidence that they came around that time period, then they probably came from around that time period. If not earlier.
They arrived in Greenland around 982, and colonized it before the Inuit arrived. Then they arrived in modern day Newfoundland (Vinland) around 999-1000 and colonized it. There is evidence that there were Viking expeditions into mainland North America, and debate as to how far the expeditions reached.
Using that logic we could argue that slavery didn’t happen, or that Muhammad wasn’t real. However, studying historical text and artifacts, and archeological findings allow us to determine much about history.
There is physical evidence that the Norse made a small settlement in modern day Newfoundland, which was know as Vinland. This supports the historical text of Viking expeditions in North America.
Norse settlement in modern day Newfoundland (Vinland) in year 1000. Vikings explored a significant portion of Northern Canada. There is debate as to how far these expeditions went into the continent.
