The notion that Jedi are not allowed to have family's is something that came up after the Great Sith War (Exar Kun) when a great deal of the Jedi order turned on itself again. After that, the Jedi started centralising and becoming more dogmatic in an attempt to prevent something like that from happening again. This increased even further after the Jed Civil War merely some fourty years after. Still, there have been individual groups within the Jedi that have had other roles, such as the Corellian Jed and the Jedi Covenant.

Well I dare say its paranoia. Yoda described the proccess of falling to the darkside pretty acuratly. Fear leads to hate, hate to anger and anger to suffering. Fear of loss, of losing those close to you is pretty significant. Losing a Husband or Wife, hell just the trauma of a child loosing his or her parents to the sith and we are already at the Anger stage. There is a reason Jedi younglings are taken at a young age and separated from their families. The Jedi Fear the Dark side and try to prevent anyone from falling on a path of darkside. And considering the times Swtor takes place It even more solidifies that. The Jedi Need to be as "Pure" as possible given that on almost any planet there is a chance of running into a sith and having to resist thier taunts as they try to make the individual fall to the dark side.
