The original iPhone (2007) was unprecedented and unlike anything else. Android did not even exist until 2008. The iPhone continued to be ahead of the market with best features, gui, display, battery, speed, camera, design, until around 2012, a year after Jobs died and Android phones started getting better designs, bigger screens, battery, Super AMOLED displays, improved gui, water resistance (before iPhone) and wireless charging (also before).
iPhone 6 entered Apple into the phablet market, 6S introduced unique features like Live Photos and 3D Touch. iPhone 7 Plus dual lens retook the reign at camera (briefly) and played catch-up with water resistance.
iPhones 8 played catch up with wireless/fast charging and retook the reign at clock speed with the A11 Bionic Hexacore Processor and Neural Engine, but is otherwise a minor update. And iPhone X has a bezel less OLED display. iPhone X is expensive but so is the Note 8. Both phones are next generation phablets (Note 8 is better because it includes wireless charger, fast charger and S Pen) but iPhone X introduced a new generation of multi touch without buttons. This will eventually become the standard for smartphones, as will pressure sensitive displays (3D Touch)
The top tier Samsung phones are the winners (unless you like iOS) but the vast majority other models lack the features, quality and speed of Apple’s small lineup.
