Also, Islam has been present in Europe since 711. Though after the Reconquista ended in 1492, Islam had a significant presence only in the Ottoman Empire’s territory, outside of that, it was virtually nonexistent in Europe. The Ottomans allowed other religions to exist but they payed a special tax called Jizya. It is the legacy of Ottoman Turkish rule that has left significant Islamic presence in the Balkans. One country in particular is a Muslim majority country, that country is Albania. Albania’s population is 3 million, about 82% European, 57% Muslim making it a country with Islamic Europeans.
