I think that we need to commence colonization of other planets as soon as possible. Mars is a very good first choice because it is most similar to Earth among the planets and very close astronomically speaking. After we secure a solid toehold on Mars, we should then move to the moons of the gas giants. We could launch mining operations in the asteroid belts to provide the needed materials and fuel. Water itself can be chemically separated into hydrogen and oxygen, both highly useful interplanetary fuels. I digress, however. My reasoning: A single asteroid sixty miles wide would be enough to kill all life on Earth, according to Inside Science News. As it stands, humankind is very, very vulnerable. At the end of the day, we're just one minnow in a shark tank of a size that defies comprehension. If we can install self-sustaining colonies on other planets, then we've just doubled our odds. It isn't a matter of if, but when. This stuff may sound like science fiction, but the same thing was said about smartphones and airplanes, once upon a time. This shouldn't be just a theoretical discussion. It needs to be an international priority. The sooner the project begins, the better our chances stand. Sorry for ranting. I love writing and I love all things space, so when I'm presented with an opportunity to combine those, I take it and run with it.
