When the USSR was around, the state controlled the means of production and distribution, the housing, income, media, everything. And there were severe human rights abuses. It was a one party state. Political prisoners were put into the Gulag, which was equivalent to concentration camps and killed 30 million people. By contrast the holocaust killed 11 million.
