All Out Battle of Evil

Remember that even without the ring, the forces of Mordor nearly won. Were it not for the ghosts, the day would have been won. Mordor still had armies left behind the blasted peaks, while men were on the brink of destruction.
The destruction of the ring was the savior of those kingdoms, their deus ex machina. The armies of darkness would rebuild and return stronger and fight a weaker foe, were it not for Frodo and Sam.

If the ring had remained lost, darkness would have prevailed and will in any scenerio without an insta-kill exploit.

the only balrog stronger than sauron was the leader of the balrogs, Named Gothmog, no not the orc captain gothmog, but the balrog gothmog

Sauron is strong enough to win, if we wasn't, the balrog would be so.
The balrog was able to take out the entire dwarf realm of Khazad-Dûm, Minas Tirith wouldn't be hard for him, and Edoras would be burned to the ground easally.

Erebor would be a challenge, but then again, they lost from a dragon. A balrog would win as well.

But do you remember the tale of the Fall of Gondolin? Gothmog was taken out by Ecthalion alone who used his sharp pointy helmet to stab Gothmog. And Glorifindel fought a balrog 1v1 on a pinnacle of rock where both fell off and died. So if the elf, dwarf, man is strong enough and a capable warrior (like the_warg who has slain four balrogs so far), the balrog would likely not win.

A balrog, though more crafty and intelligent than most men, is not able to counter an army such as the one of Mordor. Mighty is the one who can slay 10,000 wolves, yet only one wolf is needed to strike them down. Mordor has that kind of numbers to spare.

Technically Gollum saved ME if you think about it...
Not one person saved Middle Earth. Without events conspiring exactly as they happened, victory would not have occurred. If a single goblin was a better shot, the forces of good would have lost.

Gollum did not intend to nor should he be given any credit. Frodo and Sam did, and, honestly, I'd attribute more to Sam than Frodo.

Lord Gandalf would have sent frodo on the journey no matter what.As Gandalf was the one who sent frodo on his journey. In this context it could be destroyed.

Frodo, though lacking in fighting prowess, should still be given credit. what other could carry the very essence of evil to the heart of mount doom. though that is leaving out one of the chief charterers. Samwise gamgee, where it not for sam then frodo would have fallen to orcs, gollum, and despair long before ever reaching mordor.

but now I have a question for you all. who was the main character in Lord of the Rings?

There were multiple protagonists depending on what part of the story you are in. In an epic such as this, it is only natural that the author would utilize multiple main characters to illustrate their world.

Very true, though the way I picture LOTR after reading through the silmarilion multiple times is the most central character is Aragorn, for the simple reason that Lord of the rings was the story of a king being restored to his throne. The Silmerilion ended with the Gondorians being robbed of their king. It is the tale of the kings return.

just my perspective, and my this thread has derailed
