I surveyed the troops, the mood was grim. The trees cast long shadows like outstretched hands across their faces. I sighed as I caught sight of the flickering form of fires in the horizon, times were certainly tough. I pulled out my bow, fondly examining it in the dim light of the fading sun. It had served me well. The sleek bow was studded with diamond, a golden leaf lay set in its fine handle. It was the mark of royalty. My parents had bows like this; it was the royal family crest.
For a split second my eyes narrowed, imagining what it would be like to be queen… I immediately snapped out of it. Queen. It had seemed so far away but in the flickering light, I realized it wasn’t as far as it seemed. I turned to walk into the temporary base that had been set up. The grass tugged at my feet as if begging me to go outside, surrender to the enemy. I kept walking.
My eyes caught on my reflection mirrored back at me. My elfin figure, my blue eyes, my blonde hair, I turned away. One may have proclaimed me beautiful, but beauty mattered not in times of grave conflict. Times were certainly grim.
I lived in an isolated elfin kingdom. For many years we had lived in peace before someone, under the name of “Sauron” had brought his forces to attack. In my kingdom, royalty must lead the kingdom into battle. It wasn’t as if I hadn’t expected it. My whole life I’d been training with a bow and a sword. Bow and arrow was the ideal weapon here, with so many places to use as cover. We had easily repelled the attack. Al, of us could move through the thickest of branches and leaves, without making a sound. Instead of leaving they had kept coming.
Now it seemed as if the war would never end. Sauron had specifically ordered to take me prisoner. It seemed our options were running out. Not all our options are gone though. It seemed there was only way, one way for this to end.
I grabbed a hood, covering my face. It would do no good to be captured, not until I had at least gotten my mission done. I turned to my head advisor, telling him my instructions. He took the news with a grimace and wished my luck.
I stepped outside, nothing had changed. Fire and shouts still buzzed in the distance. I could only hope this would be a solution. I saddled a horse, trying to ignore all of the bad. Times may be tough, but we would be tougher. I took one last look at the stars flickering at me through the forest’s leafy branches before I was off. Hopefully, Gondor would accept my plea for help. I couldn’t bear to see more of my people harmed by such ruthless creatures. I thought of all I’d heard of the gleaming city, hopefully it truly did exist. I would contact the royals of Gondor, hopefully there; I would find a solution and an ally. If I didn’t, no doubt when I came back I wouldn’t be in my own palace, but in the dungeons of evil. Let us hope it does not come to that. I would rather die than be taken prisoner.
