In the time after the countless wars of the first age of the sun, an unexpected time of peace began. With the second age of the sun came hope, the hope that peace could prevail in Middle Earth. Unbeknownst to all the inhabitants of Middle Earth, their peaceful days were drawing to an end, Sauron was stirring; But for this time, they were at peace. This story, however, is not about the events leading to the wakening of Sauron, it is about how a man married a woman.
On a dirt road, in the place that would eventually be known as the realm of Gondor, walked a man. This man looked as any man does at first look, but if you observed him enough, you wold see the differences. This man had a twinkle in his eye, the kind of twinkle you see in a leader. It is no coincidence that this man was a leader, in fact, he was much more than a simple leader. This man was Aran. Many names Aran had, Aran the Wise, Aran the Strong, Aran the Brave, but he was not Aran the married; For that is why he was upon the road, he was on a quest to find a wife. Many places Aran had been, and he had not found the wife he so desired, of course he had seen many beautiful women, but beauty was not what he wanted. What Aran wanted was love, not love of features, but true love. Such as the love that makes the hardiest, strongest, and toughest soldiers cry when they see their lords banner waving upon the battlefield. You can now see why Aran's quest was so difficult, and why he had not found a wife yet. It just so happened that the one who had such qualities was just over the next hill, but this was unknown to Aran. So on Aran trudged, down this dirt road. As he reached the top of the hill, he saw a large plain spread out before him, and on this plain, was a large estate. As Aran was about to pass this estate, he heard his stomach growl at him, "a small stop for dinner wouldn't hurt" he thought. So onward he went to fill his belly, and then off to search for his wife. As he neared the estate, he could see its features better than he did before. This estate was surrounded by a massive wooden wall, with only one gate, as far as he could see. Aran walked up to the guardsman at the gate and said " Well hello there my good man, would you mind opening this gate for me so i may enter?". The guardsman gave Aran a queer look, and started speaking in an accent as thick as syrup "Oi wis tood no' to open this 'ere door for nobo'y". Aran seeing no other way of getting dinner said "Well tell the master of the house that Aran has come calling, then we will see if we can open this gate", and with that the guardsman ran off. Not two minutes later he came back "come wit' me". The guard led Aran to a banquet hall where a man sat, this man was rather thin, and had a wicked look about him. "Welcome to my halls, as long as you are here you will be my guest" the lord said, his voice was sweet and thick as honey, which made him all the more wicked. That night they sat at the table to feast, but with the lord came a woman. The lord noticed Aran's interest "May I present my daughter Dinnaeh". Aran knew that she was who he was looking for, his blood pumped, his heart felt like it was bursting with joy. That night as Aran slept, he thought about how he would gain her hand, and what the future would bring.
The next morning Aran awoke impatient, he did not want to wait, so he went straight to the lord. Aran found the lord in the gardens and spoke with him of his need to marry his daughter. Now the lord was a wicked man, and hated everything good, which included Aren, but he was fond of wagers. The lord knowing that there was a drought, said "If you can bring me every bean crop in the land by nightfall, then you can have the hand of my daughter. But, if you fail, then I shall feed you to my dogs!". Aran, seeing no other way, agreed. He decided to waste no time, and hurried out of the gates. Unfortunately, he didn't know about the drought, but he soon found out. He shambled down the road hopelessly thinking of how he could ever get all the crops in time, when he saw a small fire. He looked and realized it was an ant colony that caught fire in the heat, he quickly put out the fire with his flask of water, then sat down and started mourning again. "Tonight, I will be fed to dogs if i can't get all the bean crops in the land". The ants heard this and set out to get all the crops in the land, for these ants were magical and could speak in human tongue. The ants told him that since he saved their lives, they would do whatever they could to save his.
That night, Aran came to the lord and gave him all the beans in the land. This infuriated the lord, because the only thing he hated worse than goodness, was losing a wager. The lord told Aran that he was missing one bean, and to go and enjoy his last minutes of sunshine. Aran walked outside the gates and watched the last rays of the sun glint across the plains, he thought of how he had looked down upon everyone his entire life. As he was mourning, Aran saw a lame ant crawl up to his shoe, and on this ants back was a single bean. In this moment Aran realized that everything and everyone had a purpose, and vowed never to look down upon anything ever again. Because of this lame ant, Aran married the lords daughter, and overthrew the wicked lord.
A story is like a nut. A fool will bite the shell, a fool will throw it away. But a wise man will crack it open, and gain the treasure inside. (even a really bad story that somebody made up while they were writing it, such as this one)
