Better Instructions for Noobs

Hey I've actually played on this server only a few times. Both times I found it by looking at the LOTR maps on planetminecraft. And both times I joined I found I had the same problem. I figured out how to pick a team, how to pick a class, but then I had no idea how to enter the game through the spawn room. I'd suggest that with each map you have an instructions board for how to play the game, class descriptions, and map objectives. Just a suggestion.

I suspect you probably have a few people every day join the server. Get stuck right at the beginning like I did and then leave. Even if nobody was on if they could enter the game and see the maps they would be impressed.

Thanks for your suggestion - we will definitely take a look what we could do to improve our current situation.

Conwy had a title that would display 'Click on the wool map to join the game!' Or something like that, maybe do something similar?

I can send you a class that allows you to send titles easily.
https://github.com/SamB440/MCRealistic/blob/master/TitleManager.java if you're interested, unless you use Skript.

please no or if this is added allow us to disable it because it gets annoying and on conwy it stayed on the screen for too long

no hate, but honestly why write +1 when you can upvote it already

If you haven't actually been with EW long enough or if you're actually just a Conwy groupie, our goal is to *not* be a duplicate of lesser servers past or present. We are Empire War, Not Conwy.

It's a viable suggestion, one I agree with.

So we WANT to be like Conwy now, eh? Practically used to be rivals now we're becoming it's legacy.

If telling new players how to spawn is being like Conwy, sure.

I'm not saying don't, I'm saying find another way that doesn't come from others. This server Was built on originality, why stop now? There are a multitude of ways to inform new players on how to spawn, if must be one so be it. Just make it nice is all.

It's a relatively simple thing. We can have signs saying it. We can have players spam chat. Or we can have it pop up clear as day. Seems the best with the latter, in my opinion.

V1 had every single map based off something from LotR...[/quote]

And (basically) no other minecraft server had sieges with LOTR maps.

I agree with arakrsptec here, if you take one little detail from another server it doesn't mean you aren't being original. If a country is the first to discover fire it doesn't mean no one else can make it. If it's a good idea, why not use it on EW too?

I don't really like the idea of telling the 'newbies' to click the wool in the chat. If you can put it on a sign, why make it harder when it can be so simple?

We shouldn't discard good ideas just because Conwy used them. Conwy had good features that we didn't, we were never superior to them in every way. That rivalry shouldn't even exist anymore IMO.

I'm talking in the range of Minecraft servers.

*Apologies in advance for double-post*
I'm not saying discard them. I'm actually not sure what was behind my OP but no. Obviously don't discard Good ideas if they are good, just don't (as I know they wouldn't be now that I've thought about it) 'copy' them to the letter.

Note: My original post was biased as hell for personal reasons
and full of dislike towards Conwy and I apologize for that.

Glad to see the forums are active. I've never played here much except for a few hours here and there. But I always admired the amazing builds.

The main thing is to make learning how to play (and especially how start the game) as easy as possible. When a noob player joins the server they pretty much want to get a taste of what the server is all about as quick as possible. If they can't figure out how to enter the game in about 20 seconds they will simply leave.

I have a commercial website. And as the primary designer of it I've made it as simple as possible for users to operate. But no matter how simple I make it what I find to be intuitive isn't intuitive for everyone. Heck even posting instructions won't help everyone.

So my advice would be to make things as simple as possible but also provide multiple routes. Why multiple routes? Because every person who enters the server comes with an intuition bias based on their past experiences. So some will join and expect to see "Join Signs", others will look for a join compass, or a portal, or and NPC, etc...

So I was eventually helped by someone in game who told me to click on the block. You might try adding a simple sign above the block to start out. Cause that will only take about 5 seconds to implement and will help out about 90% of the people who like me joined but couldn't figure out how to enter the game.

Later you might change the block to a portal that players walk through (and also have a sign). Then even later than that you might just add a timer so that after a player selects their kit they auto join in 10 seconds.

There isn't one right answer.

As for the side conversations about originality. It is good to be original. It is also good to improve upon what other have already done. And yea if they do something better it is a good idea to do it also until you think of an even better idea.

The other advice I'd say is this. I've seen so many servers literally freeze up and not do anything because they thought every decision had to be perfect. This isn't the atom bomb or going into space. It is perfectly OK to try new things frequently. If an idea proves to be a lemon you can just as quickly change it. There are very few things that can't be undone. So don't sweat the small stuff. Just implement ideas that will you THINK will improve the server. If it fails or if there is an even better idea then implement the next idea.
