Exam homework

So well, I've got a debate exam on friday about weather the following sentence should be done or not, giving arguments for both reasons why it should and shouldn't be.

Fitness centers should be free for anyone of age below 18 years old.

I've been thinking about it a while, but I figured, 50 people can probably come up with more and better reasons than just me alone.
So if you can come up with reasons for and against, be sure to reply with them so I can add them and get a better grade for this exam :D

Remember I need reasons both for and against!

Give me some time, i'll edit this post later.
I feel that you need to give me some better context for this question, is this in your local area? Over a whole country or just in general? I'll try cover them all...

For:

- Fitness standards are dropping so allowing youths to exercise for free can seriously potentially help raise them back up
- Fitness centres are another place where a person can spend time with their friends doing beneficial activities instead of being on the street or getting up to illegal activity that is negative and non-beneficial.
- Fitness of a country is a government responsibility, for example in the UK around 30% of the population is obese with child obesity rising. The health complications associated with obesity include diabetes and CHD (Coronary heart disease), CHD accounts for over £1Bn of medical equipment and treatment. This money spent for the NHS (National Health Service) could greatly be reduced if youths from grass root level are able to exercise in good facilities for free.

Against:

- Fitness centres don't have to be totally free for under 18 year-olds. But divided into further categories such as Children 11 and under for free and 12-18 could be subsidised so it costs much much less. That way you still encourage children to stay fit and go to fitness centres but also keep some of the income.
- Fitness is important to the individual but the government is not responsible for individuals fitness. Fitness centres are provided using government schemes and people can use them if they want to. However the centre has to turn over money to function properly. (enter example of government development/regeneration scheme to do with fitness centres here)
- In most centres special discounts exist for students or for youths so encouragement already exists but allowing a large age group to go for free is non-profitable.

CBA to think of more atm.

for:
kids are more lazy than adults in general, giving them more oppertunitys will make them fitter.

against:
kids need less fitness and sports since their bodies are growing which takes a lot of energy, making les likely to ge fat.
I'm sorry but these are horrible.
Most kids are fitter than adults.. and kids need less fitness because they need energy? Kids would actually need fitness to get fitter for their body growth.

For - these places can be expensive, thus putting people off. If it is free, children are more likely to go, be healthy and stay healthy
- skills, such as team work can be applied. Leaning new skills possible which will be useful later in life, such as self-restraint

Against - Bad for business, if it is free would money by subsidised by the local authority?
- Potential for children to care more about their bodies, comparing ect, and less on education

For-
It promotes childhood health in our modern world of technology and fat foods.
Along with the children comes the adult to a fitness center (in most cases). This can be used to make profit.

I'm giving you only that, cuz cheating. :D

Why debate this when you could debate quotas for the amount of women in leadership roles in major companies?
We could only choose a subject once per class, and a different group had chosen that subject.
But of course you know that, because she told you that was her subject :p
