The Seven Heroes
Legends of Middle-Earth
Seven Heroes. Seven stories. It is now in the future, we are in the Fourth Age. A new evil has been unleashed. The Shadow of Sauron is coming. In order to defeat him again I must disclose this information. These are stories of the unknown to semi-famous people. But this is without propaganda or bias. These are people throughout the world whose bravery saved Middle-Earth.
The First Chapter
Haldarim of the Rohrrim
Chapter 1 Evacuation of Edoras and The Hornburg
This man was a Captain of Rohan. When Eomer was banished he stayed in Edoras. He was deceived and told that Eomer had fallen under the influence of Sauron. Then one day a group of unusual travelers stood at the Golden Hall’s doors. His commanding officer confiscated their weapons. He was ordered to follow behind. Soon it appeared they were attacking his lord and he was ordered to attack. Unfortunately it seemed he had left his blade in the barracks, so he went in bare fisted. He went for a tall, dark-haired man. Haldarim punched aiming straight for the man’s stomach. The other man deftly caught his punch and pulled Haldarim’s face forward into his fist. Haldarim fell unconscious. When he awoke he saw his lord was fine. He asked his commanding officer “Were the enemies slain?”
“No they cured our Lord.”
“So they were not sent to kill him”
“No, he has been told that Saruman is responsible for a curse put on him and he is casting out his advisor Wormtongue.”
“Good Riddance” ended Haldarim.
A few days passed and Haldarim was scared as was everyone in Edoras of how powerful Saruman might be.
He asked his friend, who he discovered was optimistic “How many orcs do you think Saruman can muster?” His friend laughed.
“Hah 2. If he is lucky”
2 days after that he heard Gamling yell, at the top of Edoras “We evacuate to the Hornburg! Everyone bring only what is necessary!” Haldarim grabbed a horse and a blade as well as 5 javelins. He was in the barracks at the time and fortunate enough to be the first to the Weapon Rack. It was called the Merciless. That was the name given to the Weapon Rack by the last generation of soldiers and it carried on. He was instructed to grab a bow and 12 arrows as well as a large sack of food. They started on their way. As he and the refugees were on the Fords of Isen wargs being ridden by Uruk-Hai attacked. He charged along with a small group of men. He was next to a Dwarf and an Elf he saw that he thought tried to kill his Lord. The Elf pegged down at least 3. Haldarim pegged down 1. He charged a stinking black Uruk riding a dark brown warg. His horse tried to pull back but being an excellent rider he forced it to keep going. Then unexpectedly he turned, giving huge momentum to his sword swing, decapitating the Uruk. The war tried to pounce him but using his other hand he throw a Javelin in its jaw bringing it down in midair. “Die orc scum!” He yelled triumphantly, right as he got tackled of by a small Uruk. It put a knife to his throat and was about to stab as the horse saved the day jumping over it caving in its skull. He quickly ran back to the horse stabbing a warg who tried to bite him and jumped onto his horse with in-human speed. He charged an Uruk who was attempting to run back to his warg. He did not have to swing, he just overran the Uruk-Hai. The wargs started routing and he cheered out in victory. A small group ran them down and killed them all. He saw a group interrogating a prisoner who soon died. Then as he started getting back in marching order, he realized his optimistic friend was not there. A body count came saying he was dead. Haldarim silently wept for his friend. He made an oath of vengeance. As they were walking he was approached by Elfhelm, son of Grimbold. He said “Haldarim of the Rohrrim, you showed great bravery in that battle.”
“Thank you my lord” replied a nervous Haldarim.
“Your friend Alistair was a captain, no?” replied a cool Elfhelm.
“Y- Yes my lord.” He said with growing curiosity.
“I was told to give you his rank, you are now Captain Uldun Captain of 500 Rohrrim. Congratulations.” Said Elfhelm, still his calm self, even in an exciting event.
“Th- Thank you my lord!” replied Haldarim like an excited child.
He now was at the front of the line riding behind Grimbold. He was introduced to a small fraction of his soldiers. They were new and still quite young but were more disciplined then when he was in that state.
“I am your new captain, I will be addressed as Captain Uldur. I expect the same respect to me as you want me to give to you. Am I understood? “
Unfortunately most of his soldier were in the Eastfold right now. His 20 replied “Sir, yes sir!”
Then they continued marching. Soon in the distance they saw it. An impending Fortress, that looked impenetrable. The walls were thick, the towers were tall, and it seemed un-breachable.
Théoden announced “We have arrived at the Hornburg. Erekbrand open the gates!”
Haldarim was relaxing on the wall learning the names or his soldiers. There were: Herubrand, Hama, Heostor, Goldwine, Gram, Heruthain, Guthbrand, Malvegil, Findegil, Hirgon, Iorlas, Aravorn, Araglas, Damrod, Walda, Leofwine, and lastly Deorhild. He assigned Goldwine to be his second in command.
The common misconception is that the elves arrived next. Word was sent to them for aid but they did not arrive in time.
The next day they saw Haldarim spotted a shape riding towards the keep. It was the Dark-Haired man who knocked him, and his name was Aragorn. He ran to alert Théoden.
“My Lord” said Haldarim with a bow.
“Yes captain of the West?” said Théoden.
“Aragorn is riding to us”
Aragorn disclosed what was happening, which was grave news. Saruman built and army of Uruk-Hai at LEAST 10,000 strong. They were burdened in heavy, thick armour, and pikes or blades. There were Ballista’s and explosives. It was a force not to be trifled with. Yet the host of the West stood. Haldarim believed him and his company safe until he learned this news. He was to be stationed on the fortress walls each of his soldiers and him armed with bows and arrows. The force approached. They had no way to escape except by the Cold Mountains, yet they still stood. They knew they would be caught up with.
“Men we have received order to wait. Once they charge and are out of formation, we fire!” Shouted Haldarim to his men. “Today we do not fall, today we fight for Rohan, for those that we love, for the fate of Middle-Earth!” He ended. People from other regiments cheered, even some other Captains. The Uruks marched close to the wall everyone having bows poised to fire. The enemy had pikes in the front, and they started chanting and beating them on the ground. Soon, Heostor being older than most could not hold his arrow anymore and accidently let fire killing an Uruk. This enraged the Uruk-Hai to no end. Theoden yelled “Hold your fire!” but it was too late. The enemy had started charging. A ram was sent to the gate and ladders ran to the wall. The people on the Fortress wall shot at the side of the smaller ones running for the wall. The Right side of the Deeping Wall was shooting at the people on the ram as the people on the Fortress wall could not hit them due to the upper covers of the ram. Most people on the fortress wall still shot at the ones running up the causeway with the ram.
But then Haldarim saw an almost purple Uruk with a torch and loincloth running at the wall. Though right as he was about to fire at it he reached back and saw he was out of arrows. Then right after that he saw a crossbow bolt zoom up and kill Hama, one of his men named after one of Théoden’s bodyguards. Guthbrand ran up to him and said “Captain Goldwine is injured, he will bleed out soon, and he needs help!”
“Ok men back to the keep we mus-“a huge explosion was heard from the wall. “Fall back to the keep, do not let Gamling see you.”
“Yes sir,” 18 men said in unison. Goldwine could not speak. They snuck to the keep with Findegil and Hirgon, the twins, carrying him, Goldwine. They took them to Damrod’s wife, Andswaura. “Hello soldiers, why are you here, di Lord Theoden app-“
“We have a dying man, he needs help” interrupted Haldarim.
“Oh… you came to the right place, I am a medicine woman. Let’s see whats going on.”
She spent 20 minutes working on him. Soon he was able to speak but she told him not to. “Pre-Captain Goldwine, feel luck you are alive. You are done for this battle, do not worry you will be safe.” Haldarim said to him.
Then he heard from outside “The gate has been breached fall back to the Keep!” It sounded like Aragorn. As he heard that he ran out of the caves and into the keep just in time to see the broken force come in. About 50 men remained + Haldarim’s 18.
Theoden: So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?
Aragorn: Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them.
Theoden: For death and glory.
Aragorn: For Rohan. For your people.
Theoden: The Horn of Helm Hammerhand will sound in the deep, one last time!
Haldarim got all his men situated on horses and as they all were lined up the gate was broken open. They charged. It was a lightning bolt piercing through the Uruks as if they were the air. Few men fell. The Fortress was cleared in a matter of seconds. Then Theoden ordered a stop on the bridge. They waited for everyone and they charged out to the causeway. Killing the swarm of Uruks with no casualties. Then they saw the sun rising. A bright light came from the mountains and saw Eomer and Mithrandir or as he is commonly called Gandalf. They were charging down the mountain. It was a sight to be awed upon. The Uruks could not hold. The Rohrrim lost approximately 20 in that charge.
Chapter 2 after Effects
Many died in the charge out. Iorlas, Aravorn, Damrod, Walda, and Hama all died in that battle. Goldwine could eventually speak and fight again. 5 days after the battle Theoden approached him
“Captain Uldur you left your position possibly costing 200 men’s lives to save one, why?”
“I did it because I have compassion. I saw him suffering. More people I had grown to care about would have died if I hadn’t. If you wish to strip me of command those men would still follow me, because of loyalty. That is why I left my position to save not just my soldier but a friend.”
“Well then, I am sorry but I must promote you to be a Commander, now in charge of 1,000. Also once you reach Edoras you will receive 500. So you will be in charge of 1,500 Rohrrim. Congratulations Commander Haldarim.”
“I will only accept if I can have my current, living soldiers to be Captains.”
“I guess I have no choice” Theoden smiled and walked away. He went and alerted his 15 of their new ranks.
“I think we have no choice but to celebrate” laughed the humorous Araglas. Everyone cheered in agreement. So they decided to throw a huge party outside Edoras inviting Lords and Haldarim’s new soldiers. It turned out great. Some believed that soon Haldarim could become a Lord but being a humble and modest person he denied. But soon he got an offer from a small Lord south of Fangorn to be a vassal. He claimed he was not a Lord but the man would hear none of it for he knew it would bring him much political fame. In the Fourth Age as an old man that is an advisor to the Lord of Rohan. So Theoden granted him permission to rule a Town close to Amon Hen that he named after the nearby Waterfalls, Raurous. He grew in power and got the title of Lord. He fought Uruks trying to chop wood from Fangorn and even made friends with an ent named Willowfoot. He made friends with the ents and they supplied food and water for his town as well as protection. Soon he became so powerful no one considered him a part of Rohan. He was a new Kingdom called Rohan Fangorn. Not the most creative name but that is what people called them. The only reason they had Rohan was because they responded to the call to aid Minas Tirith. Goldwine, and Heostor as well as 467 soldiers died in the charge. But soon a raiding party from Moria that were composed of 8,000 goblins, orcs, Uruk stragglers, and Trolls. The 4,000 were not enough to fend off this huge party and the Ents were at Isnegard and could not aid them. Theoden had not returned so no help came from Rohan. Elves from Lorien came and reclaimed the city but it was too late. As they got there the city was burning and Haldarim was barely saved. Along with Goldwine and Araglas as well as Deorhild. They moved to Cerin Amroth for they had learned to live with nature and did not disgust the elves. When they were living in Raurous Haldarim discovered the Deorhild was a woman and he married her. Goldwine married and Elf woman for he was actually half-elf and was accepted more than others. Haldarim is one that people of Rohan look at as a legend. Perhaps he was real, or perhaps not, but either way we know that he knew how to come to power. He went from Captain to Lord in 3 weeks.
