The Arpenian Compendium: History of the old Empire War Roleplay Server

New member
Introduction

This is a compendium of the EmpireWar Roleplay server (EW RP) that was open for 2 weeks in August 2013, however preparations for it have begun since early March. This period is commonly referred to the 'Golden Age' of the history of this server, yet many do not understand the details of this period and draw false conclusions. The objective of this post is to provide entertainment, allow players to learn more about our server's history and clear common misconceptions.

For those who have not played during the time of the RP server, the server was basically dominated by 3 major factions (Blackfyre, Ilthilien and Kargeth). There was a lot of diplomacy going on before the opening of the server, with many petty arguments which could rival those that could be experienced today. It was a fun time, but not completely a smooth ride. Also the RP server had nothing to do with LoTR except for naming influences done at the discretion of the faction leaders.

History

Part 1: Preparations

1. The Early Days

This period lasted from March 2013 to the end of June 2013. The only dominant faction was Blackfyre, which was founded during late March 2013 by Everybody13 (Aegon Blackfyre).

Blackfyre's founding marks the beginning of the RP server's proper history as there were only a few comments on the RP forums. Blackfyre slowly began to grow during this period, and numerous plans were made about different aspects of how Blackfyre would be run.

On April 6 lucolas founded House Silverwood, which was sworn to Blackfyre. Everybody13 also appointed other bannermen and set up his government under the model of a great house in A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), with his small council and kingsguard. OverlordCommand also pledged fealty and became the leader of House Ryswell.

Other petty factions rose and fell during the same period of time. However, one of them remained standing, despite Blackfyre's threat to destroy it with Fire and Blood, and lurked in the background, always watching. The Ilthilien Rangers.

The Ilthilien Rangers were founded in early June, and its leader dwight333 vowed to lead the 'elite yet unknown' force and rise into the light. Obviously this seemed like a hollow threat considering Blackfyre was 'the best organisation in the game' during that point. Numerous threats were made against Ilthilien (some of which were slightly ironic in retrospect), but otherwise not much happened except when Blackfyre and Ilthilien made peace during mid-june, starting a long-term alliance which was only occasionally broken. However, Ilthilien did not prosper during this time and dwight considered closing it down and joining another faction. As we all know, he didn't.

2. The Summer Sun

This period lasted between the beginning of July until the middle of July. The most significant event of this period was the extremely rapid rise of Ilthilien. Ilthilien had only 10 members, but it was slowly growing and beginning to gain capable commanders. On July 3 michaelrotov1234 (Essos Arandur) cast his lot with Ilthilien and was appointed military advisor. The councilmen of Ilthilien and the advisor began to establish plans to fulfill dwight's dream of gaining importance, among the most important decisions was the plan to establish Ilthilien along the southern Ered Fanya and also gain Deep Grove. This act would later largely determine the boundaries of Ilthilien and hence influence other factions.

Blackfyre slowly began to realise Ilthilien's importance yet the two factions remained allies, competing only in recruitment. Border talks were done through PM and since there were only 2 major factions there were not many border disputes, and those which occurred were quickly ironed out. Blackfyre decided to settle in the southwest, west of the river Erduin, while Ilthilien would settle in the southeast, east of the Ered Fanya and in Deep Grove.

There were also new organisations and factions. YianniC established a Blackfyre Archer Squad to complement its infantry and calvary, and Reddagger, an elite archer faction consisting of the best archers known to the EW community, was established by polarnik. (members included lotrloz, md_k47 etc). lucolas decided to establish his own province of Felanwood, which was still allied with Blackfyre and Ilthilien, and more tightly associated with Blackfyre.

3. Growing Storms

Both Blackfyre and Ilthilien continued to grow, although Ilthilien grew more quickly and Ilthilien began to feel threatened. Ilthilien began to adapt the strategy of free settlements in a fashion similar to Blackfyre's bannermen; settlements which would be in territory Ilthilien claimed to be its own were given a choice to join Ilthilien and be under its protection and have trade opportunities. The only requirements were that they would have to swear allegiance to Ilthilien and protect Ilthilien's interests; otherwise they were self governing. This policy was a success due to skillful diplomacy, with Thysduin added to Ilthilien, giving it a strategic port, and Dunamis, a self governing province/kingdom, was founded by TheShadower7. Both factions were content and peacefully coexisted, but there was always the possibility of an unexpected event- the foundation of Kargeth. Both Blackfyre and Ilthilien established their own forums (Ilthilien's is still in use today) to allow for private discussion of plans.

Kargeth was founded during late July by akam7912. It grew even more quickly than Ilthilien thanks to akam's recruiting efforts, and had more than 20 members in 3 days when it was noticed by Blackfyre and Ilthilien. Kargeth also had its share of good advisors, including boogercraft and twgxslugger, but it was viewed as an active threat by both Ilthilien and Blackfyre. This set the stage for some of the most dramatic diplomacy ever experienced in EW RP.

4. Rise of an Empire

There were territorial changes during this period: Blackfyre decided to move north while Kargeth claimed the Western Dunlands and the western shore of the Erduin.

Despite its rapid growth Kargeth had its own problems. Akam7912 was not as competent as Everybody13 and his bannermen, and Ilthilien's court was full of capable military and civilian officers. (This opinion is valid only for the duration of EW RP, a year can make a huge difference) Kargeth's image was not enhanced by akam's 'classes' with dyed diamond armor, bedrock walls, and other suggestions which were impossible to implement in vanilla minecraft. This resulted in Blackfyre's mocking with 'Keeping up with the Kargethians' and other related threads.

In response to the growth of Kargeth, Ilthilien increased its recruitment methods and a recruitment race was on. (This had negative impacts on both factions at vastly different times). TheShadower7 asked for and received permission to establish Dunamis west of the Erduin to contest Kargeth's territory, and Viru555 was similarly asked to build a crossing across the Erduin and establish Thysduin on both sides, hence allowing Ilthilien to deploy calvary in case a war broke out.

5. Final Preparations

Kargeth, although then the largest faction, experienced multiple problems. Its diplomatic strategy alienated both Blackfyre and Ilthilien, and not all of its members knew what was going on so its numbers were inflated. Blackfyre convinced Kargeth that its position was untenable, and discussions of a merger began to take place. However, Blackfyre decided that a completely collapsed Kargeth was in its interests and the deal fell through; nevertheless Kargeth's weakness was exposed and some of its members defected; it was no longer powerful enough to contest Blackfyre or Ilthilien.

Meanwhile all factions made preparations in anticipation of the opening of the server in mid August. Both Blackfyre and Kargeth had plans for its members to assemble at Riverside and do as well as they could amid the chaos, while Ilthilien's strategy was to assemble at Brist, swiftly move south and establish a base at the river crossing at Forlond, so that its members could be supported and future settlement efforts would be easier.

Among one of the most interesting events is Ilthilien's dispute with Dunamis (its own province) due to miscommunication, a phenomenon which was relatively typical in Ilthilien and caused most of its problems. Beastlycraft55, TheShadower7's co-leader, suggested Dunamis settle in the Deep Grove mountains, prompting a series of furious responses by patriotic Ilthilien who were not aware of Dunamis' relationship with Ilthilien, including threats of destruction of Dunamin towns. This was quickly clarified by Ilthilien officials and the issue was solved.

Part 2: The Grand Opening

The EW RP server finally made its grand opening during mid August. Forlond's site was quickly colonised by Ilthilien settlers, while Blackfyrans reached the site that later became Cair Andros. By the next day, Forlond was already under construction with Electric_ice777 as its garrison captain.

Part 3: The Dragon and the Tree

1. The Demon Attacks

ZgiLXNV.jpg

A Demon Gate

The demon attacks first began approximately a week after the server opened. The first sign anyone had was when Demon's Gate, a Blackfyran fortress, was attacked by a huge number of monsters spewing forth from an obsidian portal that appeared out of nowhere. A few Ilthilien were also there to witness the attack. The attack was driven off, but it was clear that there would be more to come. As a result, the fortress of Forlond and the opposite settlement of Edessa were further fortified, while Blackfyre made active preparations to meet the demons in battle.

Soon Cair Andros, the Blackfyran capital, was besieged by hundreds of demons including blazes, zombies and skeletons. Loads of Blackfyre men died, but in the end the line was held. Forlond had the majority of the fortifications facing the Erduin, but unfortunately it was assaulted by a lesser force of demons from the back. Unfortunate for the demons that is, for a back wall had just been erected when the demons attacked, and the demons had to fight uphill to reach the Ilthilien positions. That, and the small size of their army, led to an Ilthilien victory with light casualties. However, Ilthilien thought it would suffer a Blackfyre like attack and hence secret refuges and colonies were made. Other settlements were also attacked.

Siege of Cair Andros

In light of this, the leaders of Blackfyre and Ilthilien began plans to deal with the demons. Blackfyre discovered a huge cavern where the demons spawned from underneath their capital, and Ilthilien observers were invited to discuss the situation. In the end, it was decided that the demons had to be dealt with quickly in order to restore peace, and Ilthilien began to draw plans up for a northern expedition to The Wall. However, before plans could be carried out yet another war broke out.

2. The Ilthilien-Blackfyre War (Also known as the Blackfyre war, the Arpenian war or 'the war')

Pre-existing tensions

For all the various reasons behind this conflict, it was perhaps inevitable at some point. Both Blackfyre and Ilthilien were dominant powers in Arpenia, with Blackfyre more established and militaristic while Ilthilien was newer and mainly presented itself as an economic and political power. Regardless of their origins and strengths, both factions had strong ambitions, particularly during Ilthilien's rise challenging Blackfyre's hegemony for the first time in its history. Naturally, some lords and leaders on both sides would resent the other faction for 'hindering' their own power.

The war begins

Despite these challenges, neither Ilthilien nor Blackfyre wanted a war at the beginning with both factions focusing on the Kargethien problem. Even after it was solved, both sides wished to maintain peace. However, this peace was abruptly broken by one Natsu Dragonheel (madmanxtreme) and one Duke Hermanicus (akam).

Forlond was a chaos throughout Arpenia's history, with various factions striving to gain control over this important fortress. Madmanxtreme claimed to be the leader of Forlond's garrison and successfully used this Baravian Fire Drill to launch an attack at Cair Andros, the Blackfyre capital. There he slew Blackfyre's men and even wrecked some structures. Naturally, Blackfyre was furious and sent his lords to ask for an explanation. Negotiations were proceeding well until Natsu started singing the Rains of Castamere. From that point onward, war was truely inevitable.

Blackfyre successes

Blackfyre directed several attacks at the Forlond fortress, besieging the northern city. While the inner keep was barely breached due to the valour of Ilthilien's men, the outer keep was overrun and reduced to ruins by Blackfyre's siege engines. Many Ilthilien were slaughtered in the raids. Meanwhile, another Blackfyre team went to Ilthilia (Ilthilien's capital) and demolished it using explosives, inciting great anger from the Ilthilien due to the attack on this settlement which was barely begun and the wanton destruction of terrain.

Ilthilien successes

Meanwhile Ilthilien also had successes. Several raids were launched at Cair Andros, mainly under madmanxtreme's inciting of Ilthilien's men, while Kargethien Edessa also provided support although it wished to play both sides in order to take advantage. However, Ilthilien's main successes lay in the political and economic field. Nearly all of the settlements south of the Erduin were Ilthilien, its allies, trade partners or its vassal states, including Deep Grove's city of Athos, while Blackfyre's bannermen in Archenhall declared neutrality, leaving Blackfyre as mainly only Cair Andros. While Blackfyre's warriors might have been more experienced, they had a severe numerical disadvantage. However, Ilthilien never brought its numbers to full bear, for diplomacy also ended the war.

The end

By this point both sides realised that a continuation of the war was pointless. Blackfyre and Ilthilien negotiated peace, with both sides apologising to each other for their intrusions after a fiercely debated compromise in which Ilthilien was shown its lack of military strength while Blackfyre was shown the futility of fighting a heavily outnumbered war while demons were still at his gate.

Part 4: Pax Arpenia

Everybody13 proposed a peace treaty, but it was rejected by Ilthilien as it was considered harsh. After intense negotiations another treaty was drafted by michaelrotov1234 and it was accepted by all major parties. This signaled the end of the Ilthilien-Blackfyre war, the only full-scale war ever to break out in Arpenia.

With the treaty came peace. All major factions were allies once again with the exception of Reddagger, but they did not continue hostilities. However, the military forces of Blackfyre and Ilthilien did not stay idle; new plans were drawn up in case the demons attacked again or even to go on the offensive to crush them once and for all. Ilthilien's settlements continued to grow, Forlond was repaired and Ilthilia was beginning to be rebuilt, and trade flourished. The demon problem was once again the foremost concern and plans were examined in detail, with the expedition poised to leave.

Unfortunately, the RP server closed down two days later at the height of Arpenia's glory. It would be pointless to imagine what would have happened had it not closed down, but arguments continue still to this day.

Part 5: Epilogue

Note: Server names are only mentioned if they do not pose a threat to the user base of EW Siege (i.e. if the settlement attempts failed/server closed/server is not popular), but hints towards other servers may be contained in this section.

The RP server closed down on Aug 29 due to various reasons. However, none of the major empires ended along with the RP server. Everybody13 proposed opening a new server which became Lorestorm, however it was mainly Blackfyran and ultimately closed down. Here are the fates of the 3 empires:

Blackfyre: Moved to Lorestorm, inactive after lorestorm closed down. Everybody13 is considering to open The Golden Company to 'retake what was lost' and is bidding his time. Numerous Blackfyrans have joined Ilthilien and Kargethians in their other adventures.

Ilthilien: Currently still standing in another server and is the only remaining faction from EW RP. It went inactive after EW RP closed down, but thanks to the efforts of madmanxtreme, e_mod and others it reopened itself on Dawn of Empires. It then subsequently migrated to another server and is now a town in a nation on that server. However it underwent a huge crisis during mid-March 2014, and now it lies in ruins although there are efforts to restore it to its former glory. Its forum is still operational.

Kargeth: Disbanded after EW RP closed down. Its successor, Valinor, was relatively successful on RPGuilds but its members then went inactive and akam was banned. Its members joined Ilthilien during their latest settlement attempt, but some Ilthilien split off and formed Pelargir, which is located in the same nation and province as Ilthilien.

Although the three empires still existed, their history was no longer tied to that of Arpenia although they are still waiting for the day they could return, and the same chapter of history which all three empires shared was closed. Hence Arpenia was ended, but not that of its people.

Geography

Faction information

Blackfyre

The oldest of the three major factions, it was second largest in population and was the dominant military power in Arpenia, only Ilthilien's military forces had the ability of waging a conventional war against it. It was heavily feudal, with Lord Aegon Blackfyre (Everybody13) sitting in Cair Andros, and some of his bannermen had their own settlements. It is currently inactive.

Settlements:

Cair Andros: Capital of Blackfyre. It had a piston city gate which dropped gravel when closed, and the inner citadel is separated by a moat. The two sections are linked by a bridge and there is another gate. It is built alongside the mountain and is vulnerable to scaling from behind, yet Blackfyre's military strength could prevent a siege in the first place.

DzbDTUB.jpg

Archenhall/Felanwood: Seat of lucolas01. It is built in the mountains and its location is secret although numerous people have visited it. It is largely unfortified as it is not a prime target for invasion and its secrecy also aids in its protection.

Ilthilien

The second oldest of the three major factions, it was the largest in population and was a rising economic power in Arpenia. It had a large number of settlements owing to its population, and had trade ties with most other factions with the benefit of controlling all of the crossings of the lower Erduin. It was an ally of Blackfyre except a brief period (during the Blackfyre war), but was also friendly towards Edessa. Its weakness is that it was not united and did not have full control of its men, which resulted in numerous atrocities against other nations which led to war. It is currently still active and thriving on another server, with many Arpenians continuing their adventures there.

Settlements:

Forlond: Temporary capital of Ilthilien until the founding of Ilthilia, national fortress and recruitment centre. It is the oldest settlement in Arpenia and occupies a strategic position where the Erduin crossed the Ered Fanya, and hence is a major centre of trade and a major road hub. It is a fortress with a central citadel and a retaining wall and is built on a cliff overlooking the river (like Helm's Deep in Lord of the Rings), hence it is hard to siege. Forlond was besieged twice during the Blackfyre wall and the outer part sustained heavy damage, which was never completely repaired. It sits across the river from Edessa, and the two are connected by a narrow bridge. Due to its position and its role as the temporary capital of Ilthilien, it is one of the most significant settlements on the continent and is commonly misidentified as Ilthilien's capital.

eETXDRv.png

trqwse2.png

Ilthilia: Capital of Ilthilien, it is built where the two branches of the river Ilthil meet and is in the geographical center of Ilthilien. It was sacked while under construction during the Blackfyre war and was demolished by TNT to the anger of many Ilthilien. Had it been completed it would have been the site of Ilthilien's government.

Dragon Bridge: An outpost near Forlond, it is the site of one of the major crossings of the Erduin. It contains an inn and is the base of the construction team of the Forlond-Cair Andros road. A second bridge connects it to the road leading south to Ilthilia. Strangely no battle ever took place at this outpost during the Blackfyre War despite its strategic importance.

E'Bar: Settlement near Ilthilia (further downstream). It has a circular design and a large section of it is built on a raised platform, providing more protection against mobs and allowing for better defenses during a siege.

Thysduin: Settlement at the mouth of the Erduin, site of the Thysduin Bridge which is another major crossing. It was not built up as the server closed before it could but there was a small outpost.

Athos (Close Ally): Ilthilien and Athos were undergoing negotiations about its state when the server closed. It is a settlement in Deep Grove. Its location makes it difficult to trade, hence a marked torch route was laid down to the banks of the Erduin just east of Forlond. A paved road may have followed but the closing of the server prevented that from happening. It was anti-Blackfyre but friendly towards Archenhall and Ilthilien. The road from Forlond to Athos is one of the most dangerous in Arpenia as it passes through the densely wooded Deep Grove, which is full of mobs even in daytime.

ZNfQGsE.png

Kargeth

The newest power out of the three, it was vastly reduced in scale due to pre-rp politics and contained only one settlement (Edessa). It was regarded as one of the 3 major powers despite its weakening.

Settlements:

Edessa: Edessa is built next to the Erduin opposite Forlond. It contains the Edessa Tower and houses for its members. It is lightly fortified. It is linked by a bridge to Forlond.

Roads and Bridges

Forlond-Edessa Bridge: One of the major crossings of the Erduin, it is located within the center of the populated portion of Arpenia between two populated settlements, and hence is of equal importance to Dragon Bridge. It is narrow and was once blown up by Anrza, but it was rebuilt. It is built high above the river and is a thin arched bridge.

Dragon Bridge: A multi-arched bridge, it is the primary crossing of the Erduin and forms part of the Forlond-Cair Andros route. The outpost of Dragon Bridge is located on the northern end of the bridge.

Thysduin Bridge: A bridge at the mouth of the Erduin, it connects Ilthilien to the area near Beleg Amon (Dunamis if RP did not close). It was built for trade between Dunamis and the rest of Ilthilien. It is located in Thysduin.

Forlond-Cair Andros road: It is of strategic importance as it links Cair Andros, the Blackfyran capital, to Forlond, the Ilthilien fortress and a major road hub. It is built in two separate portions; an elevated road along the mountainous shore from Forlond to Dragon bridge, and a flat road from Dragon Bridge to Cair Andros, passing through other Blackfyran settlements in the way. It was an Ilthilien project and construction of the second part was extremely difficult, but it achieved its aim of facilitating trade between the two empires.

The Rise and Fall of Blackfyre
A Comprehensive History of the exploits of House Blackfyre

By Everybody13 (leader of Blackfyre, Rp name Aegon Blackfyre)

The Warning:
A strange man, bearing a book covered in blood, arrived in the middle a fortified encampment that my men and I were using as a temporary base. He plummeted out of the air, as if he were some divine being. He identified himself only as God (Get it?). We were wary, yet welcomed him all the same. He gave us the book, told us to prepare ourselves, and vanished. The book was written by a young boy, whose village had been destroyed by some form of demons, and was being pursued by the demons. The book was covered in blood, a terrible way to end ones life. Yet this was only the beginning. At dawn, with a feeling of unease, I ordered the men to break camp. We rode north, following the mountains, and eventually built a walled camp near the river. As I sat by the fire listening to the stories my men told, a shout went up by the gates. I turned quickly to see one of my scouts rushing towards us. He stopped, out of breath, and told me a dwarf and several other soldiers were out by the gates and had asked to speak to me. I agreed to speak to him, and gave orders for food and drink to be brought to these guests. The dwarf told me his name was Agorin Ironfoot the 2nd, and he wasted no time in getting to his reason for being there. He told me the great river was being blockaded by some group of Rangers from the city of Brist. He asked for my troops to take this dam and to kill these presumptuous upstarts. I told him that I had not the men to spare and I would not commit my men to such an engagement. He gave me a sullen look and refused my hospitality for the night, instead leading his men off into the darkness.

The Skirmish:
The sun rose, and with it the temporary camp of Aegon Blackfyre became a hive of activity. A merchant arrived at the gates with the sun and was allowed to enter the camp and trade. The night watchmen retired to bed, and the young lord rose to discuss terms of trade with a local merchant, who promised he could supply Aegon’s men with food and steel in abundance. Aegon agreed, and offered the merchant a place in his Household which the merchant, Prometheus, accepted. After the meeting, Aegon saddled his horse and rode out of the camp with the merchant, and Lord Ryswell to observe the place where the fortress city of Cair Andros would soon rise. Several hours after their departure, Timothy Greenwood, Lord Captain of the armies of Blackfyre noticed an unearthly red glow around the fortified camp...and suddenly a hell portal, massive in size, appeared before the gate. Fire rained from the skies, and hundreds of orcs and demon scum poured out of the rift. The Lord Captain scrambled up the wall, screaming for his sword and armor, and to man the walls. A line of archers drew, loosed, and felled the first wave of attackers. The next wave of demons could fly, and threw fireballs over the walls, smashing into the archers. With the cover gone, the demons reached the walls, scaling it in overwhelming force. Lord Greenwood rallied what men he could and began to pull back into the inner yard. Many fell as they abandoned the walls. After pulling back inside, Greenwood and Lord Avalon began to prepare a counterattack. Since the men were now heavily armed and armored, they reasoned they could retake the outer walls. The gate opened and the men poured out, carving a bloody path into the demon ranks. With the demons in full retreat, the day was won, and the portal vanished, but not without great loss.

Aegon, Vale, and Prom:
While the men of Blackfyre were fighting a seemingly hopeless defense of the camp, Aegon Blackfyre along with his Lord Builder, and the esteemed merchant Prom were searching for a satisfactory place to build the capitol. Capitalizing on the merchants excellent knowledge of the surrounding countryside, they rode to a valley ending in a waterfall. With only one approach towards the valley, the three men decided that here was the place to build the city. Prom set up his tent while Vale and I returned to camp for the rest of the men. When they arrived at camp, a haggard and bloody Lord Greenwood told them of the attack. I became even more anxious and ordered the immediate evacuation of the camp towards the mountain place where we would set up our city. Once we arrived with our possessions work began. My builders dug a trench several paces in front of where the curtain wall would rise. The stone that was quarried from the trench became the outer layer of rock that would defend our great fortress. The mountains yielded up a large supply of coal and iron from which we would craft new weapons and tools. The river provided ample amounts of water for our crops, which we placed on the opposite side of the river. Lord Avalon began constructing the outer wall and gatehouse towers, I personally supervised the designs of the river-side wall, and Lord Vale began the fortress on the mountain top. Lord Greenwood however took charge of the bridge and village, of which both rose quickly. My friend, the merchant, showed some architectural brilliance with the building of a grand marketplace which became the center of trade and a great source of income. Lord Silverwood, as head of scouting, returned with his survey of the surrounding lands. He told me that our main weakness was the mountain towards our back, and that we were vulnerable to a strike from our rear. His solution was that he would place his seat, the great city of Archenhall, at the top of the only path up the mountains, effectively eliminating the threat of the mountain invasion.

The Decline and Fall of the Arpenian Empires

Alas, most good things come to an end. This section details the eventual fate of all of the Arpenian empires.

Blackfyre

Blackfyre was the first Arpenian Empire and for a time dominated most if not all of the Arpenian population until Ilthilien's massive expansion. Blackfyre is fondly remembered by most people, and rightly so due to the great influence it had in EW history and in Ilthilien history as well. However, it had a number of pitfalls which would have caused it to fall even if the server did not close, and also caused it to be unable to rise up again when it attempted to reform.

The primary problem in Blackfyre is the lack of a strong chain of command. Everybody13, leader of Blackfyre, is undoubtedly a great leader. That proves to be his faction's undoing, however, as his strong presence and influence does not allow others to exercise their own influence, and hence Blackfyre's chain of command is not well built. All goes well when Everybody13 is around to manage his state's affairs, however when crisis strikes and he is not present his empire collapses. While this did not happen directly in Arpenia, later attempts to reform Blackfyre ended in failure due to this example.

Furthermore, Blackfyre had a relatively ill-timed foreign policy in terms of its own interests. The hegemony of Blackfyre and its dominating attitude at the beginning of Arpenia's conception caused some people to flock to alternatives, Ilthilien being the most successful example. However, when Ilthilien was expanding Blackfyre did little to curb its influence by anything other than the threat of war. By the time the Ilthilien-Blackfyre war ended, nearly all of the factions in Arpenia bar Blackfyre were either allies or owed allegiance to Ilthilien. If the war had continued, the sheer scale of manpower on the Ilthilien side would not have developed necessarily to Blackfyre's advantage, despite its claimed military superiority in terms of its soldiers. Also, nearly all of the capable civilian advisors were either in Ilthilien or Kargeth. Blackfyre had a large number of adept military advisors, but the sword is not always the best solution.

In conclusion, the downfall of Blackfyre is due to a lack of a unified chain of command coupled with a badly timed foreign policy.

Summary: When you are on top, the only way to go is down. Neither brittle iron nor soft steel is of any use. Find the right combination.

Kargeth

Kargeth is perhaps one of the most infamous factions within the EW community. It was founded by akam, at times a great leader, but Kargeth was riddled with problems even before it got off the drawing board. It attempted to assert its superiority via sheer numbers, however the words 'logistics' and 'organisation' was perhaps not in akam's dictionary. Its foreign policy was a nightmare, with akam making statements including equipping his bodyguard with 'dyed diamond armor', earning the mockery of the other factions. This greatly reduced the credibility of Kargeth compared to the other factions. Kargeth fails to match Blackfyre in military might and Ilthilien in numbers, while the lack of organisation and stubbornness within the high Kargethien command ultimately led to the defections of Kargeth's most capable members and its implosion.

Summary: Think before you act.

Valinor

Valinor is the successor of Kargeth in another server after the closure of EW RP and hence inherits many of its problems. However, its foreign policy was even more aggressive, with a war being started before its capital was firmly established. The valiant valinoreans fought a series of desperate engagement but were ultimately driven back to their (non-existant) city walls, having made enemies of most of the server, and in the end swore allegiance to the empire that saved it and hence lost its independence. Furthermore, organisational problems meant that Valinor never expanded and stagnated until it withered away.

Summary: Do not repeat the same mistakes twice.

Pelargir

Pelargir was founded on another server and is still in existence as a town, closely allied with Ilthilien but does not retain much influence. While that is partly due to a desire to stay small, there are other reasons. Pelargir's existence came about when members of Ilthilien decided to secede and found a new settlement at the height of the Council Chamber Crisis (An important episode in Ilthilien's later history on another server), claiming that Ilthilien did not have enough democracy. While their high ideals are to be admired and indeed function in real life it is all too easy, just as in real life, for members to take advantage of 'democracy' and use it to their own ends. In effect, the most popular leader and decisions instead of the most important leaders and decisions get adapted. Once those popular leaders get into power, they decide to forgo their friends' wellbeing for their own and rule with a hard fist. While the current regime in Pelargir is far better, the damage had been done. Furthermore, many of the Pelargiri, particularly those in command, were part of the Kargeth regime and hence suffered the same problems.

They are now no longer very active.

Summary: Democracy is a good idea, but with a limited population and manipulative people it fails just as hard, if not harder, as any other system, particularly in mc. Also do not repeat the same mistakes thrice.

Reddagger:

Reddagger's main flaw was its deciding characteristic: it was small in structure. It aimed to be independent from the woes of Arpenia, residing deep within Deep Grove; however when war came they were inevitably dragged into it as a pawn in some ways. It was quite successful at its own purpose, but life for them has always been hard, perhaps harder if they could not trade with Forlond. Inevitably, they would have had to either grow, or simply disappear.

Summary: All or nothing.

Ilthilien:

Ilthilien made far more mistakes than all of the other empires combined. However, that was because it was able to survive far longer than all of the other empires combined, and so was in a situation to make those mistakes. Ilthilien's banner is still flying, so I will concentrate on the mistakes made up until the Council Chamber Crisis.

The primary problem that plagued Ilthilien was that it had a political field not dissimilar to a room full of high explosives and a primer in the middle. This happened both in EW RP and on another server, the former due to the lack of organisation while the latter due to numerous feuds and complex interests involved. In EW RP, Ilthilien had a huge recruiting surge due to the desire to essentially outrecruit Kargeth and hence eliminating a strong rival. While the gambit succeeded with Kargeth breaking up, Ilthilien had the same problems as they did with huge numbers of people not knowing what to do and not always following orders. This allowed people such as madmanxtreme to seize power easily in Forlond, ultimately leading to the Blackfyre war. The situation on the other server was substantially different. Ilthilien was refounded as a sort of consortium, with multiple parties cooperating to refound the only faction that is still around. However, the factions were rarely able to get on together, and a struggle for power eventually erupted into the Council Chamber Crisis. This hugely set Ilthilien back with the loss of half its plots, many members and a huge blow to its reputation.

Another major problem was that Ilthilien was too harsh at times while not too harsh on other points. For example, the initial freebuilding and allowing members to do what they want was lenient enough to allow a political crisis to brew in the background, but harsh enough to cause some members to resent the 'lack of democracy'. This ultimately ended in an ugly town and the CCC. While the decision to allow Pelargir to secede was based on the concept of free will or self determination, in the end Pelargir turned out to be no better. The Council and people should listen to each other and democratic ideals are important, but good leaders know when to stand their ground. The popular option may not be the best option. A similar problem existed in Ilthilien's foreign policy.

Ilthilien made a huge number of minor mistakes but those pale to these in comparision. What sets Ilthilien and the other factions apart, though, is its ability to get back on its feet every time a crisis strikes.

Summary: Ilthilien has made virtually every other mistake the other factions made, however every time it made a mistake and fell, it stood back up again.

Significance of this era

The era of the Empire War Roleplay Server is often referred to as the 'Golden Age' and fondly looked upon, as it was a period in EW's history where the largest factions on this server have been formed. After this age, there has never been a significant faction that is able to match the Great Empires of Arpenia. RP not only provided a platform for these factions to form, but also long lasting online friendships between the members of these factions. Perhaps this is why this era is regarded fondly by older players. These players in these huge groups have formed a sense of identity and hence commonly refer to themselves as 'vets', with this common experience binding themselves together. The 'vet' is no more or less superior to other players, they have simply experienced an important episode in the history of this server.

Yet another significant footprint of this age is the start of forum RP. Many players have had a taste of RP on this server and wished for it to continue, and hence began RPing on the forums. This led to the formation of forum RP and all of the conflicts related to it.

The impact of this era is not felt only in EW though. Several factions have relocated to other servers with their own stories, however this is another story for another time at another place.

You should add, that blackfyre stopped recruiting when Ilthilien was still at 30-40 members(don't remember the exact time).

When I was temporarily with Kargeth in the early days before I came to Ilthilien, akam had a friend who opened a white-listed server we used as our training grounds and as a sandbox for planning city designs (I will not say the name as it is now its own server). I trained many people there in varying PvP techniques.

RedDagger were there since the start, we just immediately dived into the Deep Grove and stayed quiet. :/ You should add more Geography and information about RedDagger, contact some of our old members for info. Also try to add some more places on the map. Besides that, this is AMAZING!

I know about that unfortunately Kargeth forum was deleted so no primary sources.

You guys were so secretive that I couldn't get my hands on any info about you. We knew you were in Deep Grove, we don't know where. Could you give me a bit more info? I know next to nothing.

Our main City/Base (idc) was in the far bottom right corner, we started off with a base in the top middle of the Deep Grove (Parallel to Riverside), but Leo accidentally gave away the co-ords for that so we fled to the bottom right corner of the map. Btw, maybe you could add screenshots of the different faction's Cities?

I do not have any screenshots but thanks for the info, I will need the screenshots of other people.

You should add that a god also attacked Ilthilia ;-)

I disagree.

Thanks for the info, I have other info which you don't have (not many people know that but I fought in the demon wars too, both in the Forlond front which again not many people know existed and at Hell's gate but I got killed at the 2nd one)

What happened on the EW forums was the worst thing that could happen to a RP server; a flame war over RP started before the server even opened. The server was so amazing, but the multitude of problems lead to its collapse. What I did in Kargeth was probably my biggest RP failure as it was a giant, noob faction for the most part. I learned my lesson and I want to test it on a reopened EW RP, which I am bidding my time for.

Everyone learnt their lesson, but the staff may not find it financially viable to open another RP server.

What if donors just paid for the server?[/quote]

They may not want to open it as it takes a lot of time. They have a right to choose whether to open it or not but we have a right to choose servers as well and they risk losing players from the EW community.

They said money isn't the problem, it's time, effort and the work they still have to complete: the CW merge, Osgiliath, their school and social work etc.
