Not too long ago, the sun was a total mystery which lead people to think of it as a divine being. Today, just a few thousand years later, we know it's a large nuclear reaction emitting light and orbiting in certain ellipses.

Seriously though, coming from a religious person, spirits of the dead wandering the mortal plain are -not- real.

My theory on religion was that it was a way for people who had nothing in common to not fight and unite. The whole concept of religion probably stopped some wars, (ofc it did start a few but i think it did more good than harm back then). Nowadays, as a deist (the only fellow deist i know of is ripleyjones), I feel that religion is unnecessary.

Exactly. Just because science doesn't explain something doesn't mean it can't exist.

Actually the stuff about the trinity (1 John 5: 7-8) is added text, it wasn't actually written by John. Many commentaries and scholars say so as well. There is no "Holy Ghost"..... I know this, because I am religious :p

Why would I believe something if there is literally no proof? Like, why are you pissed at someone if you say "There are ghosts." and he says "Show me man." and you can't... Why do YOU believe that there are such things as ghosts? Because your parents taught you (who have never seen one themselves)? Because it says so in a book that comes from a time when people didn't know what lightning was? I am not trying to be rude, not in any way, but let's be honest, that's some bad sourcing material right there. So the people back then DID believe that magic existed. But we live in the 21st century man. Those people lived around year 0. We have science classes. Those people thought fire was a gift from the gods. Honestly, how is it that people still cling to religion so badly, even though the time has clearly come when we know so much about the world that we do not need faith anymore.

Religion was a way to explain things that people weren't able to explain. People said that the first humans were Adam and Eve, and that they lived in Paradise and were created by God. Nowadays, we have scientifical prove of that being wrong. But do the people leave religion? No, they find some dodgy excuse as to how that could be and keep it on. I think we have come to the point or will at least come to the point were people finally realize / have to accept reality. Religion was an invention in ancient times. But we live in the future.

I may not be able to prove to anyone that God exists. But you can't prove he doesn't exist, either. I don't need proof in order to believe in something.
