It is.... NOTHING like LotR. Not even REMOTELY close. (Before I start my generic long stuffed-with-content comment, please note that my exaggerated way of bringing across points is not ment to be offensive and does not mean I am getting emotional, it is simply the way I comment. Just wanted to say that since I read the first two sentences and thought "Wow, someone might think that I'm really butthurt over this whole thing xD")

If we ignore the fact that LotR and GoT are set in a similar setting concerning time period (sort-of medieval eras in their respective worlds), the two pieces have, not only in the way their worlds work but also in their way of storytelling, little they share.

LotR is a full-on fantasy roman that has the typical oldschool characteristics of such: - Characters who are one-dimensional in the way that most of them are either good or evil. Even such subjects as Grima Wormtongue, who have some complexity in terms of side to them, feel somewhat staged and not very close to reality. They are, as any other character, very predictable in their actions. - The fight actually only HAS two sides: good and evil. The Evil does not even have a relatable reason to be evil, Sauron apparently just wants to f*ck up some folks... Whilst I have no problem with this simple and unrealistic depiction of how the world works (I LOVE LotR), it is in no way realistic and very simple in terms of drama complexity. Yes, there are a few quarrels amongst the "good" people, but in the end, they all rally and fight the Great Lord of Evilness... - ...and when he is finally defeated, all is good, the brave hero is proclaimed king and he marries the beautiful princess and they live happily ever after. While this might sound like I just wrote down the cliché ending of a fairytail to bring my point across more clearly, I didn't. This is the actual ending of LotR. - Since the movie's heroes are never really endangered (it is a fairytail after all), Legolas and Gimli give no fucks whatsoever and banter even during situations as grim as the battle of Helms Deep. - Legolas + Oliphant = MLG Killstreak (Yes, he is not as OP in the books, but still...)

GoT, on the other hand, is a very drama-focused, very much less epic, and much more realistic portrayal of a medieval world: - Characters have multiple dimensions. They can even rape people once in the while, whilst still being considered all over "good" characters by most readers / viewers, simply because it is... really not such an evil thing to do in GoT. They are also not so predictable (as opposed to characters that basically don't even HAVE personalities in LotR, they are just good or bad or a bit of both, and predictable in any case). Best examples include characters such as Littlefinger and Varys, who are truly hard to read and have the readers guessing what might be their motives and concrete goals. - There are multiple factions, all with understandable motives. Instead of Good and Evil, there are the Starks, who hate the Lannisters, who despise the Tyrells, who grudgingly mislike the Martells, who again hate the Lannisters. The Tullys are just trying to stay alive as they are hopelessly crushed (since their lands lie in the middle of Westeros and aren't very defendable...), and the Arryns would best stay in those mountains of theirs and defend them against anyone stupid enough to attack. Oh and then there is Daenerys, who probably hates almost all of the just listed houses, so... yeah, that's that. And while one could argue that there are the Others as the ultimate evil... not really. I mean, the Lannisters would likely try to drive profit from the long night somehow... - YES, it IS set in a fictional world as well, but it is a much more realistic, complex world than that of LotR. - As to the end... I sincerely hope Littlefinger will sit the Iron Throne, just to give a big "F*ck off" to all those Dany fanboys and girls. It would be SO freaking LAME if she would *fangirly voice on* become queen and then Jon Snow becomes king and shizzle and everything is all awesome and they marry and defeat the Whiteys and they ride dragons and OMG *fgv off*... - Fight scenes are actually SERIOUS. Fighting can get you
