3rd Age. Fourth Age = Massive decline of Dwarves, Elves, Hobbits, Orcs. Sauron was utterly vanquished, Nazgul destroyed, Mordor cleansed.

I think an alternate history would be better because otherwise the Elves will mostly be gone, Orcs not much left to deal with, and generally that not much evil left to be vanquished and so forth. Plus, my hobbits wouldn't be able to deliver the Ring to Mount Doom
