If I'm going to use money I might as well just buy a new laptop which will likely be my next move, tired of trying to fix scrap. Despite my inherent hatred for Ubuntu I've found the problem is most likely just a damaged hard drive anyways

Why buy a laptop when you can build your own pc?

Might want to make sure your hard drive wasn't corrupt in the first place. If not, stop trying to install Ubuntu, if it doesn't work it uhh doesn't work. Maybe you can try a different Linux distribution like Solus, Elementary or OpenSUSE. But it might be that your laptop is not supported or just broken.

Also a good idea but I'm seriously lacking in the spare-parts department

Yeah, ran some extensive tests on the drive and it seems to have some damage or corruption that was already there-- Although, it was an older drive I'd salvaged from a laptop a few years ago so it's not overly surprising and yeah Solus is next if I can fix and/or replace the hard drive. (Although if I can replace it I might have a working computer right there.)
