Archer Guide

Hello guys !
Archer is a deadly class if you know how to use. A good archer is as dangerous at close range that at long range. As I have a good experience in Minecraft archery, here are some tips to be a good archer.

Firing from a Higher Place

A wall or a rooftop is the best place for an archer, due to the height. Even you have the advantage of the height, you are not completely safe from ennemy archers and shaman. You must use the crenels to avoid ennemy shots. When you shoot an arrow, you must be as fast and precise as possible. Don't wait your arrow hit your target to hide : shoot and hide immediately after the arrow leave you. You'll hear "ting", if you hit a player. It makes you hard to hurt, and harder to kill. I've seen many archers sneaking before leaving the safety of a crenel, thinking the ennemy won't see them. That isn't true, sneak makes you very slow so you become an easier target, even though others can't see your pseudo.

It seems to be easy to aim and hit from a high place, but it's quite hard in fact. It's hard to evaluate distances and you will have to train a lot to be efficient.

Firing from a Lower Place

When you are down a wall, you have less chance to get the kill because you don't have the advantage of the height. Moreover, arrow trajectory when you shoot vertically is very parabolic. The best way to be more precise is to go further from the wall to have a less parabolic trajectory. Your best chance to survive is to move constantly, even when you are aiming. To hit your target, you must aim just above his head, depending your distance from the wall. Infact, your arrow must hit him while going up, and not while going down.

Close Combat

I think it is what you are waiting for : how to manage a close combat being an archer. I would say you the best technic is to run ! You can use "F5" to see how far you're opponent is away. When he is far enough, turn back and shoot a bunch of arrow at him. Repeat this technics until you ennemy die, it works everytime ! If he decide to let down and turn back, shoot him in the back and he will surely regret to have purchase you :) In some case, the other player just run straight in front of you : it's a perfect target for any archer ! Just shoot as many arrows as possible and he won't be able to hit you.
In worst case, use you're melee weapon and turn around him, he would be completely lost by spinning and it would be harder for him to hit you.

Even with these technics, as an archer you should avoid close combats.

Ask me if you want more tips, I'll edit the post !

Archer wimps...

While I like the guide, and the fact that you spent time to make it, isn't all this information fairly evident? Obviously one prefers height as archer, and the run away tactic is ultimately the best strategy for an archer in close combat.

Low places are better (Morgul I refer to) I like shooting archers from the walls to the ground, or just getting them low so they need to climb back up to shoot. It works well, a bit too well. IDK about other maps, as Elven Lord I fight close combat, and I don't really go non-donor archer classes.

Tips:
-Haradrim are good for archer vs archer combat due to the nausea.
-Your arrows are not your only way of dealing damage at range oddly enough. A well angled shot at a foe near a ledge can deal lethal fall damage.
-Your sword is your weakest weapon in most cases, however if you have strength boost it hits just as hard as a troll. Don't be afraid to use it for back-stabs in close quarters. That said your armor is too weak for a head on attack. Use surprise.

I know a top for low ground say there's a sniper on a balcony get under it and wait for them to come to you

(Worked so far)

Sorry, but I have to say that I disapprove of this.

Firing from a higher place: Firing from a rooftop definitely isn't the best place for an archer. You may be hard to hit, but it's hard to to hit people on the ground, as you have to go close to the edge of the roof. Then you've got a bunch of dots on the ground to aim for. Might just be me, but I find it extremely difficult to hit from rooftops.

Firing from a lower place: Look the word parabolic up. If you fire an arrow vertically (up or down) its trajectory will be everything but parabolic. If you on the other hand go further away from the wall, the trajectory will be more parabolic.

You can shoot diagonally though. Screw physics, diagonal shots work fine.

Screw Physics?!?!
The understanding of physics is why i shoot well, minecraft should add wind, make life interesting.

Add that when you are climbing up a ladder to be aiming in case an enemy starts to shoot down at you.

And if you are defending to shoot down at the invaders
