"But the server only shut down 3 months ago! What is going on? Help!"
Relax noble player, let me explain all. Firstly, let me remind you. I shut EW down for 3 reasons:
a) Lack of time or motivation to work on it
b) unresolvable lag and a lot of bugs
c) dissatisfaction with the server as a whole, and seeing no future in this iteration of it.
None of these 3 reasons have changed.
So, why is the server back up then? Well, I had a spare server machine rented, and saw that lots of you all would be at home due to schools being cancelled thanks to COVID-19. So I thought it'd be fun to put up EW for the month I had the system already rented for, just to keep people occupied in these dark times.
De_Mik kindly donated 10 euros to upgrade the system a little, but otherwise that's up to where we are now. However...
I do concede that I've had a lot of fun over the past few days, and as such I'm currently discussing with the other Staff whether the server should stay up for a little longer than a month, perhaps permanently. Naturally this would require donations to be re-activated, which is a major step. If we were to re-open donations, I would be willing to work on some general maintenance of the server to make sure it doesn't literally break completely.
But this doesn't change the statement above. The server is still too laggy, still badly coded, and I'm still disatisfied with the server in general. I cannot see Empire War achieving its full potential until a full recode in java takes place, which would give us the flexibility to implement exciting new custom features, eliminate much of the lag, and allow the server to grow again.
If this server is up, it is only up as EW 2.0.0.1 as a bridging project to a hypothetical brighter future, not as an end in itself.
To help out in these times we've promoted ElectricCharged and Dog_lover11 to the rank of Pre-Moderator. They're both loyal and long-serving members of the community, and will help the staff team moderate the server, and guide it to its eventual destination!
A future new server would be an *entirely* fresh start, so do not expect classes, or points, or stats, or anything similar to carry over. I will re-imburse donors in some way, but that is it.
Expect the donor store to be re-opened in the next 7-10 days.
