So well, I've got some homework as practice for an exam. The goal of the exam is to have a debate about weather the following sentence should be done or not, giving arguments for both reasons why it should and shouldn't be.

The illegal download of movies and music should be punished.

I've been thinking about it a while, but I figured, 50 people can probably come up with more and better reasons than just me alone.
So if you can come up with reasons for and against, be sure to reply with them so I can add them and get a better grade for this exam

Current reasons:
For:
- Music and movie producers lose a lot of money on people illegally downloading their products.
- The fines of these punishments could be used to pay off a part of the government's debts.
Against:
- It's almost impossible to track every single person who illegally downloads something and punish them
- There are so many people breaking this law that the amount of punishments would be extreme

For: The ones who do this will hopefully learn to not break the laws.

Against: Alot of people may start demonstrating against this and the streets will be more dangerous and the goverment or whatever will lose control, even if that can be good in some cases.

I was just specualting on the against-thingie, because that doesnt really have a high chance of happening, but its still a risk.

I agree, if that does happen the goverment will know who was illegally downloading movies and music.

For:

1. To reduce the amount of people downloading, you can target and punish uploaders. This was less resources are spent to track down more people. Punishing certain uploaders can impede thousands of people from downloading movies illegally as there would be no links to download.
2. Another way to reduce people downloading is to target websites as many uploaders and downloaders use these websites to access the pirated movies. Without such assets the pirating world can't grow and could decrease as more websites are taken down. Examples include many piratebay proxies.
3. If this problem would be clamped down hard enough, future generation could be taught how downloading movies and music is a bad idea as it damages other people's incomes and lives.


Against:

1. It takes a lot of resources and man hours to track these people down even when done in the most effective manner possible.
2. People who download are dispersed globally and the effort to punish downloaders would have to be a global one.
3. Punishing a minimal number of downloaders will not stop the general crowd from continuing to download
4. There are other ways in which the movie and music industry gains money now, with the growing number of users on the Internet and sites such a YouTube, money can be gained through online advertisement and TV adverts. Most movies have to pay for music to be used in their motion picture, this way the industries support each other.
5. The general number of people who listen to music and watch movies could be affected if people are not able to watch them for free, this will lower the appreciation of the industries as people might look to other things such as games.
6. It is hard for small, new bands to sell themselves and they don't want to give all their music out for free, but there is a relationship between the amount of people downloading a certain thing and how popular the movie or band is. This downloading could help a band gain recognition as more people listen to their music illegally or not.

The illegal download of movies is punishable in USA under copyright laws but most of those sites are located in somewhere like Nigeria in an internet café, so it cant be punnsihed because they don't have laws about it there
