Something that´s crucial for the survival of this server is advertising. Without a steady stream for new players and new content the playerbase will slowly fade away like we have seen in the past, for both EW and Conwy.
We got new content on the way but i think its time to focus on ways to row the playersbase. I think there should be an update based around awarding work to promote the server.
So what could be done?

1. Re-add the Youtube rank and make sure people know about it.

2. I´ve seen some servers and games reward players for reaching ex. 10 000 views on relevant YouTube videos, i think something similar would be in place for EW.

3. Notify players about how they can earn 100 points by joining the forums, it should boost our members and hopefully increase the activity on here.

4. Looking into reviving the EW Youtube channel
I´ve talked to Tim about this, either getting somebody willing to make videos for the server or making it a community channel where people from the community can submit their own videos to get featured.

5. Maybe people can reward the players that introduced them to the server with a command?

6. Something you should do in beforehand is a SURVEY ON THE SERVER and ask players how they found out about EW, should tell us what to focus on.

If you guys got other ideas, please share them.

I think one of the reasons for players leaving is that there are too many good players on the server. Imagine their situation, they've found a cool new lotr based pvp server. They're not the best at pvp but just want to enjoy themselves. This doesn't happen, instead they get killed in their first combat. This happens every single time they spawn in. For some players to maintain their 10+ k/d ratio others need to suffer and those are the new players. I've seen this happen multiple times. I honestly understand why they leave. I wouldn't enjoy getting killed by the same players over and over again. It breaks you down.

I don't know how to fix this but maybe keep it in mind when killing someone. Let them kill you a couple of times. It's about humility.

No.

The problem with good players is something not easy to fix, yet, the problem has kinda fixed itself lately. The server has been empty most of the time I join it. And when I join, there are reactions like "No, not him again." and they leave. I haven't properly pvp'd in probably a month. And I think other players considered 'good' have done the same. This problem cannont be fixed. The server is not growing like it used to be. In the beginning of EW 2.0 it even did incredibly good, people missed the EW feeling and used to play again. I remember my favourite map being Timcove when it was added, later it was removed sadly. And I think that the constant drill of the same chokepoints and flags is what makes me want to leave. Using the same pathways, unchallenged most of the time, is quite sickening.

I've had times when I joined the server and saw Laketown map as the current map. I broke that gate easily a few hundred times and captured all flags a hundred more times. Everytime I come across the Belltower I even reconsider the reason why I joined the server.

"We need a Youtuber to increase playerbase and advertise for others", is a good idea. But we need better implementations. Donor classes are also a reason why new players leave I've noticed. Players standing in OP places with classes like Ranger and such, cant believe it still hasnt been nerfed.

I think we just need more updates from the mod team. I know they have their own lives to deal with but without new things, we would just be stuck doing the same maps over and over again. I know the 5th anniversary is happening soon and that it will probably bring a lot of players back for a little while, but we need constant updates for people to remain interested in Empire War.

I mean, I would advocate for the community being better without such inferior beings.

As cool as all these suggestions might be. I feel like there's only one way to save the server. Get rid of the lag.
Sadly, we've been trying this for months and have pretty much given up. If we don't fix the lag, we will never get more than 20 on regularly, and we will never be able to grow.

Remove catapults, use smaller maps, rewrite cod?
As far as I understand, the issue is this:
There is a skript addon which causes all the lag. It is pretty vital for running the server, but whenever we get ~15 or more players, it causes catastrophic lag spikes.
Tim/Steal has contacted the Skript plugin coders, and they either don't know what to do, or won't bother telling us, or don't have the time to help us.
On a side note, as Tim pointed out: The lag is the massive thing which leads to lack of inspiration. If that were fixed, we'd be in better shape.

Maybe we should start a hashtag and post a bunch of angry tweets about it?
