New Gamemodes

Don't consider this an official thread. Just me, like the old days :)

I believe that new gamemodes could do a lot for Empire War. Right now, we effectively have 3:

Flag-based:
  • Siege-based, where you capture flag points that cannot be recaptured.
  • Conquest-based, where you have to capture all the flags in a map, but it is non-linear and they can be recapped (Osgiliath, Laketown, Isengard on v1)

Capturing resources:
  • Moria Gold. You have 1 team that has to capture x gold, and the other who has to defend it.

Cart pushing:
  • Self-explanatory. In my view, the most flawed gamemode, as discussed in this thread.

So, what can we do to make things more exciting? Well, first we can alter the current ones & add more variation.

Flag-based:
  • Have flip-flop maps. What does this mean? Well, each team starts with equal flags, and the aim is to push the other team back all the way. This is, if my memory serves me correctly, how Great Halls used to work.
  • Have neutral-flag maps. This has been suggested for many years. It'd work similar to current Conquest-style maps, except the team with the most flags in the end would win (as opposed to the team who controls *all* the flags.
  • These alterations could be made to current maps, honestly. It'd add more to them certainly.

Capturing resources:
  • At the beginning of v2, StealWonders and I implemented a gold version of Osgiliath. It didn't turn out to well, but I think that's not a fault of the gamemode but the map. One issue is that it can be a) Too hard to get the resources/gold, b) Too hard c) Not enough incentive. These could be rebalanced to make the gamemode more fun.
  • One possibility would be to set up a map so each team can capture resources from the other, rather than having one defender and one attacker. This would make games *a lot* more fun & dynamic IMO.

Cart-pushing:
  • I mentioned some solutions to this on the Maps (Important) v2 thread
  • Another option other than what I said there would be to have the cart in the middle, rather than at one end, so either team can win by attacking.

Secondly, we can add entirely new gamemodes!

Team deathmatch:
  • Self-explanatory. This could be added to quite a few maps as it is, but would work especially well on Osgiliath & Laketown, or Isengard.

Multiple teams:
  • Not a gamemode in itself... but this would make any other gamemode more exciting. You could simply have 3 teams fighting each other, or set up some sort of allegiance system which means teams switch allegiance mid-game.
  • This might be fun with the idea of neutral flags that I mentioned earlier. You could have 3 teams scrambling to see who could control the most flags.

Be sure to suggest more gamemodes on this thread, I think it really would make EW a lot more fun and give it more variety. Tim himself has mentioned new gamemodes is something he'd be interested in.

Furthermore, we could set up a system whereby a map could have multiple gamemodes associated with it, and the gamemode would either be chosen randomly, or the players could somehow choose it. That way we don't have dozens of separate maps.

control point game mode:
both teams fight over one major point and try to control it for either a total amount of time over all or in one go.

Destroying/defending an object:
Like the dam in isengard, an object will be made and the teams will either have to defend it or destroy it.
* The damage can be set to be made by either players attacking the target (ents in isengard) or activating an object that deal damage to the target (like rams in other maps)
* You can give each team an object to defend for identical game play for both teams

assassiniv if i may mention did you get the destroy thing from my laketown idea? also if we are doing burning maybe we could make animations with coal blocks ore something as fire may lag people

---

Open Battle
in this mode there is always 2 teams and a rather flat terrain area on these maps the 2 teams only have 2-3 kits to pick and fight in formations so you can do shield pushing and arrow cover like an example

Assassination
there is 2 teams villagers and guards the guards have a king in a throne room which they are put to protect one of the villagers are picked to be an assassin they are tasked to work togheter to lure away the guards the only one who can kill the king is the assassin

Sorry tob for by accident breaking the rule i hope you return soon

Forum Rule 3.

:) Combined your replies.

I consider having a map with many gamemodes a good idea.
I belive the way the gamemodes should be chosen should be mainly random but players would have the option to vote for a gamemode, for example:
#Have all the available gamemodes appear in chat at the start of a new game so players can click on whichever they like.
#Have signs on spawn to vote for a gamemode (like how u choose a team).

I don't believe that this will work very well, some maps are made for a certain game mode, like minas tirith is made for attack/defense and if we would give it a new game mode it will simply ruin the whole concept. Can you really see yourself pushing a cart all the way to the top of tirith?

Some maps could be used for more than one game mode after some changes but most of them will have to be completely remade for that purpose.

I believe that the maps should be just added to the running routine in a way that will try that no similar game mode will be played twice (one map will be normal, the second will be control point, normal, push the cart...)

Currently we have 2 Conquest Assault maps: Osgiliath and Laketown. We could have simple Conquest maps, where every flag is at first Neutral and teams capture them from opposite sides. A map that could work for this game mode would be a ruined version of Dale (from the Battle fo the Five Armies) or some other fitting map.

Yes, some maps can not have certain gamemodes, i don't think every map should have every gamemode, i think it's best to have a limited amount of gamemodes in every map and only those that suit them best.

Lastly, concerning the way the maps are chosen, i think a routine should be implamented but i would still like a way for the players to vote for a gamemode. Maybe to prevent a gamemode from been played twice it should be temporarly removed from the list.

Yeah, that was my idea but perhaps I didn't articulate it well ;)
