I'm going to list out my feelings about the role-play server. Right here. Right now.
Generally, the server is looked down upon for it's:
- Inconsistent, terrible, invisible, annoying, awkward role-play by players.
- Incomplete starting capitals (though I did like the idea behind each).
- The map being possible too big leading to not enough interaction between players.
- Player-made factions.
- Boring/ incomplete like a block of Swiss cheese story line.
- Low white-list admission standards (though the application itself I thought was fine).
- Lack of veteran role-players to lead by example.
- Poor communication among staff and players.
- Useless OOC arguments brought by RP conflict and vice versa.
Evidently, I could keep going. And in reality, the server was terrible. It was not the fault of one, as many choose to believe, but the fault of all. I personally see the role-play as my own failure, if it were to come down to one person. I left the server at an important time, a time when someone who understood the necessities of a role-play server was greatly required. I gave so much, to ultimately give so little. And for that, I truly apologize to you all.
I see the role-play server as a server created by a staff with a dream. A great dream. A dream that could one day become a strong contender in the role-play circle (obviously exaggerating, but it makes it feel nicer). And yet, I now understand that the staff was never ready, was never prepared for what lay down the path of a server like that. They could never foresee the consequences of the things they skipped, or the requirements that were... required. Again, I place myself to blame, for I was caught in this dream for a time as well.
However, in that dream I saw potential. In the ruins of the server, I still saw potential. If I were to list things that I would have added, if permitted:
- Stronger white-list application standards, and an example application for players to understand what is needed.
- Finished cities that included NPC's to be used for role-play commerce, and quests. We all love a good quest.
- A more structured story-line for the server, and published lore on the site that gave everyone an idea of the setting.
- Removal of player-made factions, and more focus on player-led but still staff-guided factions.
- Specialized applications for players who wanted to be bandits or criminals or other species.
- Players could only be human - to start.
- Smaller map leading to greater interaction among players.
- Role-play guides and other articles on the website that clearly defined the style at which players must follow or expand upon.
- Better established rules.
- Subtraction of useless wars, a more focus on story-line impacting battles.
- Increased amount of veteran role-players to help lead the newer players and to give them a role model.
- An OOC chat. I believe many issues could have been resolved through simple communication.
- Better staff-to-player communication, especially on events.
Once more, I don't know everything about role-play servers. I simply know what makes some work quite well, and I know what makes others fall. The fact that you all - or most - went on to learn how to role-play, impresses me beyond belief. I think I'd like to role-play with you
all if another server was attempted. And while I do find the role-play on the forums quite vexing, it still remains fun to read (for the most part). Another role-play server attempt by this staff team, which has grown tremendously, would work. I hold that statement true, in the stormiest of seas. And remember, tell the staff your ideas. A staff that closes itself to ideas and wishes of the players, isn't a true leader.
