Here's another riddle guys, post answers below :)

A spy has been sent out on the mission to infiltrate a castle.
After a few hours of searching the area, he comes to the conclusion that the only way he'll get inside is the main gate.
But the gate is heavily guarded and the guards will ask any man trying to enter a secret question.
So the spy hides in the bushes and waits.

After half an hour, a guard patrol returning from duty approaches the gate. The gate keeper opens a small window and calls out "eightteen" to the guard captain. The captain responds with "nine". The gate keeper disappears and, a few moments later, the gate is opened.

After another hour, a rider halts at the gate. The gate keeper reappears at his little window and calls out "twelve". The rider thinks for a second, then replies "six". Again, the gate is opened.

The spy thinks he has his solution for the secret question. It seems to be obvious that the answering number is half of the one given. So he backs off and returns a few hours later, dressed as a merchant.

As he approaches the gate, the gate keeper's face appears in the little window above the gate - "fourteen". Without hestitating, the spy replies "seven". The gate keeper disappears, and the gate is opened. But as the spy attempts to enter the castle, he is welcomed with a hail of crossbow bolts, killing him instantly.

What would the correct answer have been?

The bards r dead for the most part. I was one in the past, but it's not much anymore to me. Just shows how the veteran's influence is decaying.

Okay, so the solution is rather simple, although it probably won't jump to your mind quite so fast:

When the gate keeper calls 18, the guard captain responds with 9. "Eightteen" has 9 letters.

When the gate keeper calls 12, the rider replies 6. "Twelve" has 6 letters.

When the gate keeper calls 14, the spy answers 7, expecting it to be right as it's half of 14.

But, as the solution is the amount of letters of the gate keeper's number, the correct answer is eight.
