Since you're taking your sweet, trecherous time, I'm posting my own theory:
Minecraft characters have wings. Not elytra, their own attached wings. As [user avatar="https://cravatar.eu/helmavatar/Ajroets/74.png" name="Ajroets"]10733867[/user] said in his post on the pikeman/gundabad thread, elytra is just a cover up, a shell, to hide wings beneath. So in my theory, elytra provides just enough support for the wings that they can get "activated". I'm assuming it's air-tight, but that could make more problems with it. But yeah, wings are probably affected by oxygen, or whatever kind of air is in MC. Probably bad quality since no one but mutants (testificates) lives there. Although there are animals and spiders. I don't know, probably oxygen.
Which just made me remember something new.
Since oxygen is provingly killing us, what if the infestations in MC are based on that? But yeah, it's a bit farfetched.

Or there is to much oxygen. That explains the giant spiders.
Which made the inhabitants die out? Were they presented with so much oxygen their noses grew complex and they turned retarded? Perhaps they were searching for other planes to live on and found End and Nether, where they were killed and turned into pigmen/skeletons and endermen, respectively. But that would mean that the End and Nether also probably have oxygen. Bck to my point, I have no idea where elytra is found, but I presume in the End? Anyway, people found that and then set to return to home, but the zombies killed them?

my theory is that elytra is bull shit dipped in fermented cat piss forged by the great dev's of 2015
I think that MC is simply the result of some great war that left the world changed and opened up ways to new realms. I mean, it would explain the weird ass landscape that you see. The Nether could be the result of the some super-nuke or something that left a few dug in positions destroyed and burned, and the Pig-Men and Ghasts could be the result of some experiment to create a breed of soldier that would guard the realm. The End would more or less be the same.
