Spear and shield, the classic combination. Spear has superior reach, range, and versatility. Can be used to keep enemies at a distance or impale them with a quick thrust. Shield to protect yourself from any projectiles that may be launched your way or to maintain superb protection if your foe manages to close the distance.

I'd say axe and shield simply because the axe offers both the heaviness of a mace and the sharpness of a sword. It's good for shattering enemy shields and crushing enemy skulls. Spears are also pretty good, but if that enemy gets into really close quarters, then there is not much that a spearman can do. Greatsword is just... no.

shield for protection from attacks so its easier to defend and spear for attacking cuz it has range

Probably axe and shield as it can splinter the enemies shield allowing friendly archers to fire upon your enemy. It also can extremely damage your enemies decreasing the morale of surrounding troops as no one wants to see an obliterated face.

Obviously the shield, but the choice of other weapon is more confusing. Holding a defensive position would most likely put you in an area with right corners, such as a city or fort. A spear would be great, however, it's far too long to be used in close quarters. The hefty axe would work better. But on a battlefield, or an open area, the spear would work best. A real greatsword is a comepletely different kind of beast, which shouldn't even be recognized as a "sword" the way one is used resembles better the use of a halberd or pole arm or pole ax. Perhaps you meant a longsword?

Greatsword, axe and shield yes you have the shield to help blocking but when you block you look offense and some site and the axe is pretty close quarters. Similar to the spear except if the opponent has a it has longer reach but it also can be broken easily and you would be screwed in close quarters. The Greatsword however gives you full visibility when your attacking or defending, has reach, and is basically a giant sword so close quarters may prove to be difficult but you could still win or do all right. Plus you can shatter shields and chop people down before they get close to you

Learn your facts 1. Shields cannot shatter. Shields are wooden, and banded in metal, sometimes plated in metal. Neither can shatter 2. A greatsword is useless at chopping because of its sheer size, it's made more for blocking and thrusting and slicing 3. A greatsword is useless at close range

Greatswords I assume are things like zweihanders, which are so mastodontic they were used to break polearms apart, so not very defensive, is it? Still, you have reach and quite a versatile weapon. Spear and shield sounds great, although I don't think this close quarter argument is valid, simply due to the situation not being explained: he's just holding a defensive position. You have a lot of reach and defense, so these guys should win. And no, smart folk would arm themselves with a polearm AND a side arm (swords, maces, axes). If you only had a shield and an axe, you would switch sides and kill that dumbass general.

Must say, I find it hard to view greatswords just for something one would do easily with any other sword. I mean, it's a long, strong, slicy and pointy stick: it's like a Swiss knife. Still, you might actually have some degree of advantage in close quarters: said pointy stick is long and is hard to parry or block and has the strength to break spears. I'd keep a sidearm just in case, but the great sword is great for a reason.
