Donator Helmets and Team Balance.

When you donate a certain amount you get a gold helmet. (See here for the ranks and which helmet they receive.)
Back when they got introduced, I talked to sjoerdtim about them and strongly disagreed with the donor helmets. I told him that they made donating pay to win. Later when I noticed that they only got added on the human/blue team. I told him that it would likely ruin the balance of a game and make it very unattractive to play on the other team. Well, Tim disagreed with me and pretty much ignored the issue, so I stopped talking about it for quite a while.
Yet, right now I am writing this thread. Why? I believe things have gone exactly the way I predicted them to go back then. Donators, who are often better players, most of the time stack up on the human/blue team, ruining the balance of teams and having their helmet advantage, which ruins balance even further. This basically means that the teams get unbalanced and in many cases only unbalanced when there is a certain amount of donators online. Because of this, it will be very hard to balance the teams at all.
Back when I argued with Tim about this issue, he has said that the donator helmets barely have any effect and that it was just so people knew who has donated and could follow as a leader (hence the crown we see nowadays). I believe it has turned out to be false. The donator helmets pretty much always tank a whole hit and makes you win 1 vs 1 scenario's where the opponent is just as strong or stronger. I feel like classes with lower armour, especially archer, ranger and likely berserker as well, benefit a lot from the helmet.

I think something has to change as soon as possible. As possible solutions I propose that either the donator helmets get removed entirely, replaced with something else that has less impact on gameplay (such as an item as helmet with a custom texture), or both the human/blue team and the Mordor, etc/red team have to get them as well, or at the very least something similar. I'm not making a poll because I am afraid that both donators and non donators will simply choose the option that is best for themselves, without thinking about the server and team balance.

tl;dr: donor helmets cause unbalanced teams, something has to happen.
 
Maybe the donor helmets could be given an armour value of zero, making them cosmetic only. It's possible with 1.9+.
As for the Orc teams, they should get some sort of custom head so they aren't left out.

That's actually a great solution. Didn't know that was possible. Does this mean that the orc heads can also have adjustable armour values?

I'm not sure if it can be done with non-armour items.
 
I'm a donator with this perk and I think that it's unbalanced. If it really is for cosmetic purposes only, then why is it that it gets increasingly powerful protection enchantments with rank? As Freek said, it makes 1v1s a bit tilted and even messes with teams a bit when donators want to wear their shiny headgear.

Plus, there's this issue: What if the donators don't want to wear a crown? Think about it: crowns make players stand out, make people notice them. That might be useful if you want to lead your team into a charge or something, but the crown is equally visible to the enemy. In a crowd, you will always stand out and are thus a more popular target. I, for one, don't want to be a popular target.

So, basically, like what you said, remove its combat usefulness, but I also think that there should also be an option to disable the crown altogether, maybe via a command.

Agreed, a minor problem but it can be easily fixed, battling someone who has a golden helmet with protection 2 gives the other person a High dis advantage, for instance with Stealwonders, When im archer, I have to shoot almost 5 full drawn arrow at least to kill him (sometimes more, I have no idea how) While others die at 3 full drawn shots. This is highly unfair and needs to be fixed, I like all the above ideas.

um no. sometimes it takes 5 shots instead of 4
 
I also would like to point out the difference between a soldier and spearman in melee combat is 1 armor. The gold helmet provides 1 armor to any class without a head. In this case, the weakest donor helmet would provide spearman the same armor rating as a soldier just due to the donor helmet.

This is such a massive difference it completely discourages me from playing on attackers when there are donors online, since they are so much harder to kill. I am sure other players also feel this way and go defenders as a result, causing considerable team imbalance.

Imo donor helmets should be scrapped / made cosmetic only since they provide too large of an advantage over other players.
 
I really like the idea of having a crown for donators, but I agree that it unbalances it mroe than I expected.
I've removed the protection on the helmets, but I'll keep the gold helmets for now.
Someone mentioned being able to make them just decorational, but I wouldn't know how.

The following command gives a player a golden helmet that does not contribute to armour:
/give [player] minecraft:golden_helmet 1 0 {AttributeModifiers:[{AttributeName:"generic.armor",Name:"generic.armor",Amount:0,Operation:0,UUIDLeast:310839,UUIDMost:365947,Slot:"head"}]}

I don't know how this would be implemented with the server plugins, but that's the vanilla way to get one.
