You can't block with pikes - blocking has been removed in 1.9 or 1.8

I don't see the problem... He's using his shield meaning you can't hit him in the front or from the side, only from the back.

You can't block and hit at the same time.
After testing and reanalysing your video I have come to the conclusion that the player used "f" to switch the shield and the pike around. The player isn't actually blocking with the shield. You can't left click while blocking. Even though it looks like the player is blocking the blocking viewmodel is a bit different. --> Report invalid.
