"The best you can do is make things better for your future offspring." Hold it there. The way I see life, its only point is to entertain you. You support people suffering from poverty, you can invent revolutionary tech to increase the human standards... but unless you get some fun out of it, of what use are these things to you? You can support those people so they don't suffer as bad as they would without your support... but everyone is going to die anyways. You, them, everyone else. Seems like quite the waste of time, right? You invest time and money in pimping people's life standards (which might not necessarily give you any satisfaction), just so they die, completely ANNIHILATING your work. You can invent mind-blowingly awesome shit... but you are going to die anyways. So unless it directly effects your life, what use is it? So, if you think about it, what you said is actually quite wrong. Because when my offspring come of age, they will move out and live their own life, and they will stop taking direct influence on MY life. And when their offspring is born, and their offspring's offspring after them... I will be dead. Why would I give a shit about making things better for my future offspring? The life standard they would currently be born into is good enough, and apart from that, they are going to die anyways, so why would it matter? When one looks at it this way, the only question that often comes up is: "Well, smart-ass, if we all die someday and everything you do is basically unnecessary... what SHOULD you invest your time in then?" And the way I see it, you should invest your time in entertainment. Because your life is short enough. And you will not profit from great deeds that make this world a better place for those who come after us. So the way I see life, its only point is to entertain you.

Reading the text takes less than a minute. So while I did not expect YOU in special to read it, I do indeed think it is not too much to ask of the people wasting their time looking at posts as unnecessary as this one to spend 40-50 seconds on reading something with content. 11532960

I'm talking about if you are trying to continue as a species But at the same time, you can't be to selfish and use your life just to entertain yourself, Because of this we got bullies, internet trolls, etc So basically your life goal can be focused on entertainment but that doesn't mean you should be stealing it from people though through upsetting others

Well, that is really just a question of moral. What one should and should not do can not be stated that easily in terms of moral. If a bully finds great fun in what he does and can live with the fact that he is making someone's day or month or time at school in general worse... go for it mate. That doesn't mean that I support bullying. I do not, in fact. But if they choose to do it, let them do it. I personally helped quite a few kids at our school who were being bullied / mugged. Some of them were my friends... but others I did not really know. And I did not help them because I have a good heart or whatever (because let's face it, I really don't) - I helped them because I REALLY ENJOY FISTFIGHTS. And while I do, I am not as stupid as those bullies and pick fights with random people, I pick fights with assholes to legitimize the fighting. That way, I get a great lot of fun AND improve the life of someone else. But if a bully chooses to, well, bully someone and he likes it, and then you come along and tell him "You shouldn't do that mate!"... then that really isn't true. Because from his point of view, there is nothing to lose and he is having the time of his life beating up that kiddo.

If everyone had this viewpoint, the living standard of humanity would be much lower today, because people in the past wouldn't have cared about inventing new technology and ideas to make the future better.

The important point is the "if". Now I am not a Philosopher, I am a realist. And while what you are saying is 100% true... it is not what happened. Which means, I can freely live by this viewpoint without it having any negative effects on me. And I know that sounds very "selfish", but honestly mate, think about it - why the fuck would I care?

Humans care for their offspring because they are programmed to do so, but some humans such as you may be different then other humans. Also scientists who event new technology alot of the time are making it for themselves, not only so they can use it, but so they will be remembered and have the fame of making it. The Problem though if we all cared only for ourselves, we would be an anarchy, the life expectancy would be low, so we have to in a way care for others in order for our good being

If helping out others (offspring, friends, etc, included) did not benefit an individual in anyway why do people find it enjoyable to do, wouldn't evolution get rid of those people and everybody would be a bunch of selfish people?. I will explain the most logical reason, it helps them also in the long run, for example if you give guy A an apple and guy B wants to take all your apples, kill you, etc. Do you think maybe guy A will at least try to stop guy B?. There are countless examples of this, government for example, what do we get out of paying taxes and helping everyone else out? its not like our money is going to effect us. So you see helping someone else out IS helping yourself out, as you can do bigger things. 12682803 "Now I am not a Philosopher" LOL yea right, if you werent a Philosopher you wouldn't be posting here.

First, to address Point No. 1 of your comment: NO, evolution WOULD NOT, in fact, get rid of those people, as evolution works pro survival of the race. What I am saying, on the other hand, is not that it is best for the survival of the human kind to be selfish, but that it is the best you can get out of your own life to always think about yourself first.

Point No. 2 of your post I do not have to reflect on much, as I actually agree with it on a large scale. Now I think you are getting me wrong though. Because what you are describing is "helping others on the basis of benefitting yourself". What do we do by giving guy A an apple? We benefit him. But at the same time, we are upgrading our relation with guy A, thereby benefitting ourselves. Of course, we COULD just be a nice guy and that is why we're giving him the apple. But the reason YOU describe for this action fully indicates what I just said above. Why do we pay taxes? Infrastructure, police and firefighting departments, free hospitals, rent. We are, on a large scale, benefitting ourselves. I really have to point out here that I am quite fond of the tax system they have in Norway. Since the state does not have any debts, the tax money that wasn't used is actually paid back at the end of the year. What do we get out of helping everyone else out? Well, depends on the kind of person you are, but for me, nothing really... which is why I don't do it. The only time I would help someone out is if I will know this person further on in life (which would mean the action could take effect on our relation) or if it directly benefits me (as in the already described fistfight situation).

Now for Point No. 3. That I am taking place in an active discussion about life choices does not indicate I am a philosopher. A philosopher... well, philosophies. Which I do not do. I do not ask myself question about life and search for their answers, let alone ask myself questions about life that can not be answered (like all that "Why are we here?" stuff). I am a realist. And I really enjoy discussions. Good enough reason to be posting here?

Evolution is pro race and thereby pro you. Because well if you don't have offspring because you die because you gave guy A an apple instead of eating it evolution will get rid of nice people still. also you can't predict if you will see guy A in the future why is it enjoyable to give him an apple? Because you cannot predict the future, and he may just save your life indirectly somehow. Because if guy A didn't save it somehow evolution would still get rid of nice people, because if everyone that was nice and gave guy A an apple was more likely to die/not reproduce than people who didn't give guy A an apple, nice people would still cease to exist because selfish people would survive more often, there for if people find helping other people enjoyable it means their ancestors survived by being nice and their cousins who were selfish didn't survive. I mean its the idea of teamwork, 2 is greater than 1 no matter how you add it up. A realist is a type of philosopher to some degree then, because if you hadn't asked a question of some sort to your self you would not of come to the conclusion that you should not do something unless it benefits you in the future, satisfies your need for entertainment, etc. you would just be a whatever kind of person. And the way you worded your first comment made it sound like everyone should be a selfish **** all the time because who cares?, I am glad I better understand that now.
