There were survivors. The same can't be said of House Blackfyre.
N.B. This happened on a much smaller scale during the Blackfyre War, our scouts were pushed back from Dragon Bridge (All of them survived). Also Dunamis forces retreated from the demons to Cair Andros, but this time they took heavy losses.
