Make Osgiliath a Flag Map
Osgiliath simply does not work as a gold map.
The Problems:
  • It is too large.
  • There are far too many different ways to go, and places to hide. Compare it to Moria Gold, for instance.
  • Adding to this, you can't see the objective from the other end, as in Moria Gold. It is generally more confusing.
  • It is the only map which results in large scale server vacation when it starts.

The Solution:
  • Make it a gold map. Below is a picture of my proposition for a smaller flag map, but one which would still be enjoyable. I remember that even in the dying days of old EW - with very few players - after the bridge, Osgiliath was one of the map that still worked quite well.
  • The blue points are those which Gondor starts with. The lighter blue are possible/alternative flag positions.

I hope you understand my concerns! Osgiliath does simply not suit the gold style. Now I understand that Tim wants to diversify this server - by having less CTF maps - however, keeping Osgiliath as a Gold map is simply counterproductive.

This does not mean I want Osgiliath removed! As far as I can see, repurposing it (as soon as possible) would be by far the best course of action.

Tell me what you think!

I agree. unless you play the map several times to map it out in your head and somehow figure out which flag belongs to which name, its basically impossible to navigate for most people.

Not really a problem for me - I built the map :D
Yeah you built it all by yourself! Well done! With no help! xD
But I don't think navigation is the problem. It is the map size, innate complexity, and unavoidable structure.

Use the old map and make flags in the same position as before (minus bridge stuff, keep it in the same sort of area as now). Also remove the barriers in the map which limit mobility so much and ruins what made osgil so fun in the first place.

The various alterations to the map were made on vague instruction from Tim.
He realised that a gold map would need clear paths, like are so obvious on Moria Gold.
However, in reality this is an impossible task with Osgiliath.

I dont mind how there are new paths. I just dislike how limited the routes you can take are now. You used to be able to climb on the roofs for shortcuts, which in my opinion would be super cool for a gold map or CTF map since smaller numbers are able to out-mobilize larger numbers such as ones protecting gold creating interesting tactics. As I said in a previous post, this is what for me made original osgil so damn good, since I am free to move in almost anyway I want and can.

YES! Osgiliath was my favorite map on the old server. I loved the non-linear, chaotic nature of the battle. Except for the bridge part. Let's all ignore that :P

Random biased opinions I have that go against the majorities opinions:

Use the unspoiled version of the map, sounds silly i understand but the rubble is more of a hindrance in some cases rather than adding any sort of appeal to the match.

Use barrier blocks to reduce the size of the map, maybe even use certain parts of the map for different modes. The surrounding buildings you cant access can act as background.

Both of these suggestions may sound odd but they don't remove the chaotic aspect of the game yet encourage playing as a team / playing the objective.

That is basically what steal and I did to the gold version of the map. We blocked off a good 1/4 of the island with obstacles/barriers, and we made a fair few 'movie set' buildings along paths.
