Hello!

Let’s get one thing clear: we love it when Minecrafters host servers. Tiny or massive, running vanilla or modded Minecraft, we think they’re all great. Playing with friends in persistent worlds is awesome. Everyone knows that.

Over the past week there’s been lots of discussion about Minecraft servers and your right to monetise them. Legally, you are not allowed to make money from our products. There has been one exception to this rule so far – Minecraft videos. We’re about to make a second exception – Minecraft servers.

Hosting servers can be expensive. We want to give hosts a way to cover their costs. That said, we don’t want our players to be exploited or to have a frustrating time unless they pay. The following rules, which may be tweaked at a later date, have been created with these points in mind.

You are allowed to charge players to access your server
So long as the fee is the same for all players, you are allowed to charge for access to your server. You are not allowed to split your playerbase into paying, and non-paying users, nor can you restrict gameplay elements to different tiers of player.

Basically, if you’re charging for access to your server, you are selling a “ticket” and there can only be one type of ticket, regardless of how much people are willing to spend.

You are allowed to accept donations
You are allowed to accept donations from players. You can thank them publicly or in-game, but can’t give preferential treatment for donating. You are not allowed to restrict gameplay features in an attempt to make money.

You are allowed to provide in-game advertising or sponsorship opportunities
You are allowed to put adverts in your Minecraft worlds to help with costs. Used within reason, adverts and sponsorship can be appropriate ways to fund a server.

You are allowed to sell in-game items so long as they don’t affect gameplay
We don’t mind you selling items in game, but they must be purely cosmetic. Pets, hats, and particle effects are OK, but swords, invincibility potions, and man-eating pigs are not. We want all players to be presented with the same gameplay features, whether they decide to pay or not.

There is one exception to this rule – capes! We have a lot of fun making cool capes for extra-special members of our community and Minecon attendees. We’d like to keep them as exclusive as possible. So, yeah, no capes please, even if you’re giving them away for free.

You cannot charge real-world cash for in-game currency
We don’t mind in-game currencies which are earned through playing, but you are not allowed to sell them for real-world cash. Remember – if the stuff you sell affects gameplay, we’re not cool with it.

Don’t pretend to be us. Provide your customers with loads of info
If you do decide to monetise your server, you must clearly state that the purchase is not associated with Mojang, declare who the money is going to, and provide a purchase history and contact details. You should also check the legality of selling digital items in your specific region.

Thanks for reading!
As I hope you’ve noticed, these rules are making attempts to prevent Minecraft servers becoming “pay-to-win.” We hate the idea of server hosts restricting Minecraft’s features to players who have already bought our game! It seems really mean.

We’re hoping that these rules will give hosts opportunity to continue creating awesome Minecraft worlds, and for our players to enjoy them without being forced to spend.

I’m sure we’ll get loads of questions about this subject over the next few days. I’ll prepare a follow-up post once I’ve gathered your queries.

Have a good day!

Owen – @bopogamel, and your buddies at Mojang.
We've read the posts at Mojang.com.
They don't allow any type of purchases that helps to remain the server.
95% of the players don't donate for "cosmetics" as they're not useful in game, and thus our money flow will go too low to keep the server allowed.
Even less people donate for nothing in return.

We really appreciate all the work Mojang has done to Minecraft, but this is basically making it very hard for us to keep existing.
We understand a lot of problems are caused by the mass donations on large servers that ask over 500€ for OP items or unban purchases and we definitely don't like pay-to-win, but without ranks like this people basically do not pay enough to keep the servers alive.

You say this isn't 'pay to win', but that isn't true. It's really hypocritical if you ask me. You need large groups of normal players to POSSIBLY take out one donator. Tim, people honestly don't actually pay to support the server, they pay for the classes, for fun, to be able to win. No matter how much they insist with their fru-fru "Oh, I payed to support the server -- to congratulate Tim" Its. Just. Not. True. There isn't a loophole, you aren't allowed to have a pay to win server, and that's what this is.

Of course people pay for the classes only.. Most people don't care about me having to pay for the server.
If there weren't classes, I wouldn't be able to afford this.

The server isn't pay to win at all, as ds_nine said, a normal class can still simply kill a donator class.
Most servers give their donor classes things like Notch' Apples or full diamond armour prot 4, that's pay-to-win.

What we need is for Mojang to change the wording so that it uses the word "Excessive", then we would slip under the radar and back into Lord of the Rings style killing eachother

That wouldn't fck up the server tibby. It actually a good plan.. Right now we have a REALLY GOOD
LOYAL PLAYERBASE! Just drop us from the Advertising sites and we'll BE SET. We could advertise through
word of Mouth and Donate in seeecret.
It could be like the Underground Black Market of Minecraft Servers
WE ARE THE MINECRAFT MAFIA

I kill groups of donators all the time...I'm no donator.

Before I donated I could kill donors with a flick of the wrist, now I am a donor people like MD and Anrza (won a donor rank but still usually plays with normal classes) kill me with a flick of their wrists, it is not pay-to-win

What he means is Commander doesn't have full diamond armor protection 4 dia sword sharp. 5 and 20 spears and Commander is 500$

Tbh, being a non-donor doesn't restrict gameplay at all. You can still fight, be on a team, earn points etc. How do these donations "restrict" gameplay?

You can ask non-donors, having donors on a team is a advantage for the non-donors and donors, so donors just do not help out themselves they help out the non-donors too. Even the non-donors on both teams get a advantage from them, so technically donors give everyone a advantage.

that's the point :P
Our personal opinions on this are not important, Mojang's opinion is all what decides these points.

I'll wait on monday on the Q&A about this by Mojang before taking any action.
Action would be either removing donor ranks (and thus destroying all or ending the servers by destroying the money-import.)

On siege, there could be a point shop (for items bought for ever) They could sell items like- extra protection and feather falling when you vote, you get an iron sword instead of a iron axe for the orc soldier. iron helmets for gondor on the maps were you don't get them. The non-donors could only purchase the boost, but never upgrade it. (They could buyiron helmets, but never upgrade it.)

Lords could upgrade it once, Legends twice, veterans three times, sages 4 times, and king 5 times. For the donors, the upgrades would beworth something very small, like 500 points per upgrade or something like that. This would mean no classes, just the donors get upgraded items, that the non-donors get too.

A list of upgrades here

Iron Sword for orc soilder 5k points (only 500 points for donors)

Iron Helmet for gondor/rohan 5k points (upgradable for donors, (to get added Prot. and golden helm), 500 points

Prot. 2 Feather falling 3 when you vote- 7.5k (only 500 points for donors)

Strength I for 2 secs after a kill-10.k (Upgradable for donors, plus 1 sec each upgrade, 1000 points per upgrade)

Diamond Sword for gondor soilder 15.k points( 5% chance) (Upgradable for donors, 1500 per upgrade))
