This is a personal poll, and completely independent of the staff team.
I think we can all agree that the current system is less than perfect, let's examine a few other options.

Option 1: Revert to 1.8.
  • The old combat mechanics are undoubtedly far superior to the current system of 1.9 PvP without cooldowns. In terms of hit detection, critting and comboing it is brilliant when compared to our system. I recommend you play on a 1.8 pvp server to see the difference. In addition, the activities of a player after being hit (knockback etc) has changed a lot.
  • In addition, the old archer system was superior in terms of mechanics. I'll let Rikumaru explain: "The maximum range you could achieve was lowered, the arrows aimed more along the x-axis making bows much easier to use removing alot of the skill archery originally had. Additionally the players Y-velocity also effects where the arrow will land / shoot from the bow, pretty much removing jump shooting and shooting while falling."
  • The downside is that this removes shields and dual-wielding, which could be considered a necessary sacrifice.
  • Importantly, plugins can allow 1.9+ clients to connect to 1.8 servers, so we would lose no players.
  • The regen system in 1.9 is perhaps one of it's fortes, but I think that could be readded with some code/plugins.


Option 2: Use full 1.9+ mechanics.
  • This may well solve some of the problems presented by 1.9 without cooldowns, for instance hit detection. After all, 1.9+ is designed to have cooldowns, so using it in a sort of half-way state is weird. In my view, full 1.8 or full 1.9 are the most advanced, polished and skill-requiring options... with our current state being a really messy compromise.
  • However, we experienced 1.9 with cooldowns on the old server, and it was generally despised.

Option 3: Stay as we are.
  • Well I think this option is obvious. It has a lot of problems, but would cause the least controversy, and the least amount of work for StealTim.

Of course, changing the status quo would be a massive feat in terms of plugins etc, but for the longevity of the server, it must be considered seriously.
 
1.8 is the real deal. The archers are broken now, and much less skill is required and I definetely miss the combos. I used to play on this server all the time, however when the new pvp system arrived I left. It wasnt the same experience, I doubt I will play here much longer with 1.9. I just dont find it fun and interesting like 1.8. I would love to play here with my friends once again and relive the amazing memories I have from this server. I dont care about shields and dual wielding, I want the glorious empirewar back! I think I can get at least 4 people to return to the server if 1.8 is relaunched.
 
If it was as simple as just reverting to the old hit detection, we probably would. We are never going to use MC1.8 servers with plugins that allow other versions to connect, for the simple reason that most plugins are made for the latest MC version, not 1.8, and this would cause a ton of conflict.

The main problems of the new pvp have already been fixed mostly:
- Bows have been revamped for our server, which doesn't entirely revert it, but at least improves the damage.
- Cooldowns have been removed

I am a huge fan of shields, dual wielding, and the new regen, so I feel like this is as much as we can do. Of course, any balancing suggestions are welcome, but we won't revert to MC1.8.

Edit: Also I just want to note that the poll is kind of biased. I would vote for MC1.8 too, if it was a real possibility, but for the rasons I just explained, it really isn't. So please, before anyone votes, think of that.
 
How on hypixel you can play on 1.8 - 1.12 ?? its possible to do on EW?
 
Shields are a great thing, jump shooting was a little unrealistic so I don't think its a bad thing that it was removed.
There are only 3 things that makes me mad about the new vir which are the crappy kb, the skill less archery and the Regen with full health that could be used in many good ways but it just made the defenders (especially spearmen) OP (the defenders can hide behind their defence line and quick Regen while the attackers will get shot if they will slow down to eat).

Archery is less skillful due to the jump shooting changes. The changes aren't actually directly to do with jumping but rather the change in y-axis velocity. This effectively removed counter shooting as when you get dmg'ed you actually move up slightly and then down completely screwing with your aim. Jump shooting took quite a bit of skill to do, and it allowed the player to slightly adjust their aim using their movements AND mouse view. Now we can only reliability adjust our aim using ground movement and mouse view which is very limiting.

If it was possible to have compatibility between 1.8 and 1.11 like on hypixel this would be absolutely amazing and I would think many more people would play here as a result.
 
We should stay as we are because the old server pretty much got abandoned when updating to 1.9, and 1.8 would remove the shieldmen class and dual wielding what would make me sad. :(

I think that the main problem with cooldowns on the old server were that they weren't customized but default. Default cooldowns are boring, I think most people here will agree with me there. You hit once, and you have to walk back and wait a LONG time before you can hit again.
This can easily be solved, by customizing the cooldowns on the weapons. Of course, switching to full 1.9 might cause a few balancing issues, but those shouldn't be too big. My suggestion here is to use full 1.9 mechanics and use custom weapon cooldowns. Right now not many have voted on 1.9 because they don't want the slow and boring combat we had on old EW when 1.9 came out.
Shorter cooldowns on weapons would bring a faster PvP experience. Which means it will require more skill and speed which I think will be way more fun than regular cooldowns.

Another thing I'd like to bring up is that reverting to 1.8 will cause issues with the world, some kits, plugins and maybe cause other incompatibilities as well. While 1.8 (with the plugin that lets everybody connect) would be amazing and something I would really like, I think it is simply not possible.
