Rei's Minimap: It allows you to put waypoints so you won.t get lost.
Optifine: For people like me that only have 2gb of ram, this mod is like god.
TooManyItems: Who haven't cheated with this mod?, you begin by saying "I will make my house without cheating" and you end up creating your survival home on Creative
Galacticraft: I had a lot of fun with this one, it took me a while to make it work but i allows you to go to the moon and mars, and create space station.

Optifine: Obvious reasons. Having the ability to think during combat instead of blindly shoot where an enemy might lag to, is always good.
Tropicraft: Well, it's a mod I found where I could push my brother in a volcano and stuff his face with fresh caught fish, who wouldn't like a mod where you could do that? (kind of old, I know)
Natura: Adds a bunch a random nature stuff, yet gives the option of living in a giant tree. It's included in most mod packs without say, so well, that's what I can think of.
Kind of random, but well, it's a bunch of mods, some of which are added simply for entertainment, and I don't know about you, but finding and living in a giant tree is entertaining.

Damage Indicators. They Help in pvp a lot, showing potion effects and the exact health of an enemy. They can also detect Regen hacks. If you hit an invis, you would see him gain health, (a 1 above hsi head) and you would then find the location of the invis player.

Optifine Mod = Great for computers that aren't made for gaming, without it I would get 5 fps all the time.
LOTR Mod: Great for LOTR fans, really fun to play in survival, and almost everything from LOTR you could find in there. (Sadly no minas tirith)
Too Many Items: Ok with default minecraft, but with mods it is awesome. You can literally spawn hobbit homes that include the hill, adjust spawners, (i think it is fun when ents and olag hai's fight each other.), and many other features.
I wish i could list all the great mods that go with Too Many Items, but i could only choose 3 :3

And this is quite possibly the best mod ever.

i like the lotr mod the best, because i play on a lotr server so if i lag on EW i can always play more lotr in singleplayer, also there is alot of VERY COOL stuff like real orcs and not zombies -_- and other thingis that are BEAST :O
