My ideal RP server would be, as you say, Small. Small servers encourage few factions anyway, as close-together towns and cities naturally become closer - as opposed to a vast map (Cough-Blackflames-2-cough), which encourages many factions. Sure, it'd have races, but these would be more for RP than mechanics. The 'pre-built cities' would be more of principle forts. They would be fairly minimalist I guess, but have pre-defined lore etc. I basically like a lot of power to be in the hands of the current RPers, rather than the admins/owners who built and set up the server. In that aspect, BF was quite good. The idea of a principle city also attracts me. On BlackFlames there was the spawn area, but it was always too far away to be of much use. The problem with this is it might completely deter conflict if it was too big and important. I mean surely a lot of conflict comes about due to mistakes, and having a principle city where everyone comes together might detract from that, IDK. As you can tell I'm basically really undecided. I think I have come to realise that all RP servers are inevitably short lived. A bit of holiday fun, but even servers who set themselves up to be permanent basically never are. Hentz managed to extend the lifeline by adding admin-powered quests, which was pretty fun I guess, though I think I might prefer player-led RP. I hope you can make sense of that ramble xD.

I see, you make good points. May I suggest a New World? Instead of ancient empires, you're colonists from the Old World setting foot on this new continent? That way you have starting "base camp" pre-built cities, but you can build your own settlements from scratch. It also encourages exploring, adventuring, etc. The world is mysterious and dangerous.

I'm always for a good rp, though sadly holidays are a week from ending and it's hard to do well in one if you miss out on even one day. Idk, it's probably due to my slight current obsession with historical dramas, but I was thinking that it might be cool to go a bit less exotic on this one and have the rp take place in the Papal States of Renaissance Italy. The main city would of course be Rome, with the Vatican and such, but factions could be different noble families and their territories inside the Papal holdings. Within a faction, you could be a merchant, bravo, architect, farmer, a lord, or take the cloth and be made Cardinal by the Pope, who would begin as a staff member but could in time "die" to give rise to a dynamic leadership where players could get elected to the office and have to juggle the interests of rival factions to avoid being deposed by force. And of course some elements of fiction and/or fantasy could be added. However I do like the New World idea and would be very willing to participate in it (or any iteration of an rp you decide on tbh xd)

So the two current ideas I'm juggling are New World and City-State New World Pros: Lots of strange, exotic places for people to explore, lots of opportunities for unique dungeons, RP encounters, etc.. Like BF and EW, you'd have to build up from scratch, giving it a survival element. Cons: Might be a bit too big for some people, spread out, etc. though this is easily fixed if people live in fear of the wilderness (I made a test world to check it out and yes the canopy is dense enough that lots of mobs spawn RIP ;) ) City-State Pros: Tight-knit, everyone has to RP together. People aren't dividing off into their own little factions, nor do we have to worry about monopolies like Blackfyre or Westmarch. The horrid squabbling that comes with kingdoms about land claims, rights, etc. would dissolve, replaced by guilds and individuals. Cons: Aside from the surrounding countryside and maybe a few locations, all RP would take place in one city, perhaps making people feel limited by it.

Well we've had our fair share of attempts at big world rp servers, but I don't recall any city-state ones. My suggestion is that you give the latter a try; if it's successful, great. If not, you can add a sort of storyline where the New World is discovered and people dissatisfied with the city-state can settle the other continent. Or you force everyone to migrate.

Thing is everyone wants PvP with RP elements and I want actual RP. I mean comment if you actually like true RP or just play there for the war eh?

I can give you some advice if you decide to go with a "New World" type of a server. Just shoot me a message or something, I learnt quite a few things from both of my servers (and I do regret not doing some things, probably would have made the experience a whole lot better).

I'm definitely not there for the war, otherwise I'd be playing on faction servers xd

Humans only is my preference. You wouldn't have to bother giving various races different stats and everyone would start off equal and simple. Otherwise you'd need to do a lot of balancing for PvP and still have people complain. Small map is fine, as long as it offers some terrain variations, not necessarily many biomes, just having a coast, some forests, some mountains and hills with rivers, that is enough. Many epic looking locations though! People should have motivating eye-candy. And factions will try to own those cool and awesome looking places, promoting border friction and conflict, roleplay conflict of course. As for cities, i fucked it up quite a bit on Blackflames, never getting my event cities finished (Dawn's Gate on BF1 and Alderrath on BF2), but it's quite nice having at least one place where server staff can create opportunities for roleplay (guilds, organizations, exploration of the city culture and people (NPCs usually) etc.) and events (Arena fights, Civil wars for players to fight in, but that do not affect any player nations directly, etc.). The amount of cities depends on the map size, on smaller maps one is enough, maybe some other smaller NPC locations can be added. From my own experience i can say though that such NPC cities can be a pain to build. (Especially, where i fucked up, if you start their construction after server launch...)

Now actually reading the comments, yes the city-state idea with people having positions in society, with guilds, a government and what not, does sound quite interesting. Pure RP. That i have seen very rarely. I can imagine getting into that. Honestly, I'm a bit tired of the survival aspect of Minecraft, so having this full RP thing going on would be a breath of fresh air in my MC experience. Events could be a lot of fun as well.

What Dani said. And if there are non-human races, I would like them not to be stereotyped and reduced to memes (ehrm ehrm, LotC). Well, actually, you should not have them - or just remove elves. Seriously, no elves. Edgelords and teenagers would go for them and do some weird erotic anime crap, so just remove them all together!

It'd be pretty neat for there to be this kinda stagnant society, city-state, working as a body with several estates, all with differing interests, bias, and agendas to fulfil and spread.

Exactly! Conflict arising within the city, not through territorial conflict. Guilds, companies, houses, and powerful individuals.
