Character backstory: Earlier this year, Ha'zi's mother passed from a violent illness that took her in her sleep. Ever since, he and his dad, Lod, have been trying to manage life and financial troubles as Lod and Dace both worked jobs as merchants to help obtain food, clothing, and shelter for their family. So, Ha'zi and his father have been working hard for money. Ha'zi got a job in delivery. During this time, Lod developed a drinking problem. Ha'zi and his dad had a few fallouts during this time. Lod, while drunk, would sometimes attack and blame Ha'zi for their troubles after his late deliveries. Meanwhile, Ha'zi would tend to have really late deliveries because they are so frequent and far, so there would be times he sleeps in and misses them to regain energy. His last delivery, however, knowing that his family really needed this money and that it all depended on him, got up earlier and headed off. He was making good time, being nearly half way there, when the sandstorm hit. It slowed him down for hours and it was so blinding, that he lost direction a few times because he couldn't see his compass. But, he kept going on. When the storm died down, he readjusted his route and continued. Finally, he arrived at the merchant's house, and knocked on the door, package in hand. When the merchant arrived at the door, he slapped Ha'zi, hard, knocking him to the ground with the package. The merchant berated the boy, telling him he was five hours late. In reality, however, he was only 1 hour late, but the merchant wanted to see how the boy would react. Ha'zi went down on his knees, pleading to the merchant that he pay him, for his family had none. The merchant decided to be sympathetic.... with an ulterior motive, of course. After going back inside, he returned with a bag and dropped it in front of Ha'zi, saying it would be enough to get rid of his family's debt. The only reason he did this however, was to boost his reputation--- wouldn't everyone love the person who so generously helped a child in need even though he failed his delivery? Ha'zi, in total shock, quickly thanked the merchant and went off, knowing he had to return quickly because of the man saying he was five hours late.
When he returned late at night, Ha'zi , bag in hand, went straight to his father, happily telling him the news. However, his father had a different reaction. He punched Ha'zi in the forehead, drunkily thinking that Ha'zi was going to keep the money for himself, and grabbed the bag of coins. He shouted at Ha'zi, wrongly criticizing him for his greed, and this is where he broke. So, Lod dragged Ha'zi, sobbing, to the slaver place and gave him away. Ha'zi watched in disbelief as his father walked away, and held a small golden coin with a silver edge that fell out of the coin bag when he was knocked down. He thinks, "Why would my father do this? There must be something wrong with him... but why would he give me, his only son, away into slavery?" He looks at the coin again, and notices that the rays of light from the barred window in his cell hit the silver lining, giving it an extra shine with the gold and silver. Dazzled at the brightness of it, he thinks, "Maybe there is still some good left.... That merchant... he helped me, even when i clearly messed up... Maybe father made a mistake... he will come back for me..." He nods off to sleep, with both of his over the coin, holding tightly.
Late that night, Lod came to realize what had happened when he grew more sober. He went to the slave hold and demanded to the seller that he made a mistake, that he needed to see his son. The man laughed and said, "You will have to give a better offer than mistakes and love. Come back when you have actual currency." After that, he gave a wave to the guards, who began to march towards Lod to take him outside. Suddenly, he exclaimed, "Wait! I do have money!" He pulled out the money the merchant gave him and tossed it to the seller, who eyed it, interested. "Well, i have an offer then, as this money, although very grand, would not be enough to cover your boy's dues. So, if you care very much for him, here is your deal: Best one of my men in a duel, and you will get your son and your money. But if you lose, you will have both taken from you, along with your life." After little thought to this, Lod nods (wow, rhythm) and accepts this. The seller snaps, and his largest guard appears, a brute named Medzo. Then, Medzo and Lod are marched to the front of the hold, and are each given a scimitar. Then, the duel begins. Medzo's first move is to charge wildly straight at Lod, who barely dodges, getting knocked on the ground. Medzo wildly strikes down at Lod, whom is cut deeply on the arm, then kicks the brute, hard, in the chest, knocking him a few feet away. Lod manages to get up when Medzo comes at him again, this time with even more energy, and stabs Lod right in the chest, the weapon going all the way through the other side. Medzo looks down on him victoriously, and whoops and cheers. When he goes to his retrieve his sword, however, Lod uses the last of his strength to quickly plunge his weapon into Medzo, impaling him, too. Soon, both men die to each other's blades...
Ha'zi is woken by a deep scream from outside and, rubbing his eyes, looks outside to see two dead people being carried away. When he looks at the body of his father, he does not recognize him, for his face is bruised and covered in blood. He feels sorry for the men, and nods off to sleep...
